Overall Purpose

Child and Youth Counsellors (CYC) support students' success and achievement in academic and social opportunities through the development of therapeutic relationships. They provide direct mental health supports to students in their school environments including counselling to identify strengths and to develop life skills and foster growth and development.
The Child and Youth Counsellor, Itinerant works as a member of an interdisciplinary team comprised of Managers of Child and Youth Services, Principals, Vice Principals, Teachers, Professional Support Services staff, Caring and Safe Schools, Equity, Guidance, Student Success, Community Support Workers and others.
On professional matters, Child and Youth Counsellors report to the Managers of Child and Youth Services.
On operational matters, Child and Youth Counsellors report to the Principal.
Summary of Duties
---------------------
Provide a continuum of counselling services for students in conjunction with team members;
Work collaboratively with the school support team to develop pro-active strategies and programs aimed at enhancing student success;
Provide group or individual short-term goal-oriented intervention/conflict resolution counselling;
Provide assistance to students in the acquisition, reinforcement and maintenance of academic, communications, social and personal management skills, including goal setting regarding attendance;
Provide support and information to students and families regarding non-clinical community resources such as legal, day care, welfare, housing and transportation;
Provide workshops and in-service opportunities for parents, staff and students
Meet the professional expectations of Child and Youth Services (CYS) including preparation of reports and maintaining appropriate records as per the CYS Standards of Practice;
Attend meetings and in-service seminars/professional development activities as required; and required; and
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
------------------
University Degree in Child and Youth Care or Social Work with one to two years' experience working with children/adolescents in a school setting;
Experience in working with children/adolescents from equity-seeking communities;
Demonstrated ability to provide group or individual short-term goal-oriented intervention/conflict resolution counselling;
Demonstrate an understanding and active engagement in anti-oppressive practices in Child and Youth Care and the educational issues and barriers of equity seeking communities;
Ability to maintain a co-operative working relationship in an environment where teamwork is essential;
Strong organizational skills;
Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills;
Knowledge of community resources that assist youth;
Demonstrated knowledge of legislation and policies relating to youth; and
Basic computer skills.

Program Specific Provisions & Responsibilities:
As a position preference, the successful candidate will self-identify as First Nations, Metis, Inuit, will have a strong understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing, and have experience working within First Nations, Metis, Inuit communities;
Knowledge of current education issues and barriers as well as an awareness of available supports is required to effectively support and advocate for First Nations, Metis, Inuit students and families;
In-depth knowledge and understanding of the Ontario First Nations, Metis, Inuit Education Policy Framework and current issues and research pertaining to First Nations, Metis, Inuit education; and
Demonstrated competence in the development of materials to support teachers and schools working with First Nations, Metis, Inuit populations.
