Job Purpose



The Senior Advisor, Employee Relations is responsible for providing direction and advice about the implication, scope and breadth on all people related matters for employees of the Saulteau First Nations (SFN). This role builds the capability and capacity of SFN by ensuring the work environment fosters personal and professional growth for all employees.

Duties and Responsibilities



HUMAN RESOURCES ADMINISTRATION



Respond to internal and external Human Resources related inquiries or requests and aid when able; or redirect inquiries to the appropriate person within the team Maintain records of personnel-related data in both paper format as well as in a Human Resources Information System Liaise with other departments for inter-related functions (payroll, benefits administration, performance management, training opportunities).

CORRECTIVE ACTION AND CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT



Assist in the preparation of Corrective Action and Performance Improvement Plans, and other correspondence to assist Department Managers with employee performance and expectations. Assists with preparing Return to Work agreement following illness or injury or in relation to the Drug and Alcohol policy.

PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT



Schedules the probationary performance review meetings; prompts managers to complete their reviews. Update forms and documentation for efficient performance review processes. Manage probationary review process and advise managers when probationary end dates are approaching. Remind managers of approaching key dates such as the end of a probationary review period, or an employee's anniversary date, and ensures the respective manager has the necessary paperwork readily available for these employee milestones.

REWARDS AND RECOGNITION



Recognize staff achievements and recommend rewards and recognition for exemplary employees. Maintains an inventory of SFN merchandise for presentation to employees. Participates in Long Service recognition including maintaining accurate pay records. Updates communications with list of rewards and recognition recipients for entry in the Monthly Newsletter.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT



Document employee participation in mandatory professional development initiatives. Develops training agreements and training plans with Department managers. Monitor compliance with training agreements and drafts repayment notifications for noncompliance. Assist Department managers with training initiatives and staff retreats. Develop and maintain a skills inventory for the Nation. Identify future training and development opportunities for the Nation. Work cooperatively with Department managers to identify training gaps and training solutions.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS ADMINISTRATION



Participate in annual compensate review and recommend revisions. Provide back-up and support for payroll processing. Provide back-up and support for benefits administration and processing. Provide back-up and support for leave inquiries. Assist with the enrollment and termination of benefits and pension plans as required. Educate new employees and ensures that all staff are aware of the benefit and pension plan and coverage. Assist employees with the application for LTD and other benefits. Maintain Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) and ensure employees have access to the information and resources. Complete Personnel Action Record (PAR) and provide employee changes to finance in a timely manner. Notify Payroll when ROEs need to be issued or employees need to be re-instated post leaves (following maternity leave, leave of absence, education leave, etc).

POLICY ADVICE AND RISK



Lead policy discussion and training initiatives to foster a Respectful Workplace (including policies on violence, harassment, etc). Create investigation files and investigate employee complaints and disputes. Recommend appropriate resolution and action to the Human Resources Manager. Identify policy changes and revisions in response to changes in legislation including Canada Labour Code and Employment Standards Act. Recommend policy changes in response to changes in the work environment or practice. Consults and provides advice and guidance to managers on matters pertaining to labor relations, workplace conduct, Canada Labour Code, employment standards, talent management, compensation policies, and procedures.

OTHER DUTIES



Participate actively as a SFN representative in collaborative partner networks and in related community activities. Participate in SFN sponsored community events as required. Provide Human Resources support and advice to Saulteau's Commercial Entities as needed. Support and work collaboratively with other members of the Human Resources team.

Qualifications and Skills



Degree in Human Resources or Business, combined with five (5) years of experience in in human resource generalist and employee relations role. Equivalencies will be considered. Experience working within and providing interpretation of the Canada Labour Code and as they apply to First Nations. Knowledge of employment related legislation, regulations, and policies (Canada Labor Code, Employment Standards) Experience and knowledge of SFN is an asset. Research skills including the ability to interpret and explain employment related case law. Excellent oral and written communication including briefing and report writing skills. Ability to solve problems, make effective decisions, resolve conflicts, and manage time effectively Maintains high level of confidentiality in the handling of information. Valid BC Driver's License, a positive role model and a successful Criminal Records Check.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Excellent communication skills - oral and written. High attention to detail. Excellent customer service skills. Approachable and professional attitude. Knowledge of Saulteau First Nations is an asset.

Work Conditions



Work is performed primarily during the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Occasional travel may be required within SFN community and surrounding community. Salary Range: $91,851.22-$105,628.90
