The Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) is a federal initiative to clean-up low-level radioactive wastes situated in the Municipality of Port Hope and the Municipality of Clarington. The project involves remediating a large number of contaminated sites to established clean-up criteria and consolidating the waste in a new engineered mound (one in each community). The remediation and construction aspects of the project are subject to Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) hearing and environmental approvals. The PHAI has a very high public profile and is a top priority for the Government of Canada and the Port Hope area communities. The project is sponsored by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), and led by Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL).
In the upcoming Co-op Student work term, the Historic Waste Program Management Office\xe2\x80\x99s Port Hope Project branch will be involved in ongoing Phase 2 activities for the Port Hope project. The activities will be in follow up to the work completed since Phase 2 began, such that the construction phase activities of the PHAI projects continue to move forward. There will be considerable effort involved in the planning, coordination and oversight of engineering work for civil and environmental disciplines related to various aspects of the PHAI project, including the radiological survey of approximately 4800 properties, a radiological survey of Road Allowance sites, radon monitoring, delineation of sites requiring remediation, completion of remediation designs and ultimately the remediation of low-level radioactive waste contaminated sites in Port Hope.
