The Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) is a federal initiative to clean-up low-level radioactive wastes situated in the Municipality of Port Hope and the Municipality of Clarington. The project involves remediating a large number of contaminated sites to established clean-up criteria and consolidating the waste in a new engineered mound (one in each community). The remediation and construction aspects of the project are subject to Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) hearing and environmental approvals. The PHAI has a very high public profile and is a top priority for the Government of Canada and the Port Hope area communities. The project is sponsored by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), and led by Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL).

In the upcoming Co-op Student work term, the Historic Waste Program Management Office\xe2\x80\x99s Port Hope Project branch will be involved in ongoing Phase 2 activities for the Port Hope project. The activities will be in follow up to the work completed since Phase 2 began, such that the construction phase activities of the PHAI projects continue to move forward. There will be considerable effort involved in the planning, coordination and oversight of engineering work for civil and environmental disciplines related to various aspects of the PHAI project, including the radiological survey of approximately 4800 properties, a radiological survey of Road Allowance sites, radon monitoring, delineation of sites requiring remediation, completion of remediation designs and ultimately the remediation of low-level radioactive waste contaminated sites in Port Hope.

What you will be doing:

  • Review relevant project documents for clarity and accuracy
  • Confirm Construction specifications and drawings are being followed in the field
  • Perform general field oversight on remediation sites and transportation routes, complete daily reporting on activities, photograph field work taking place
  • Review billing and invoicing to provide validation
  • Participate in project meetings including internal, with Contractors and with residents
  • Record and manage various databases of project information
What we are looking for:

Applicants should be civil, environmental, geotechnical engineering majors, or comparable Technology or Technician Diploma Students. Technical construction skills are advantageous, as is interpersonal and conflict resolution experience. Excellent attention to detail and knowledge of Construction Health and safety is required. Experience with related software such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Project, Primavera will also be considered when reviewing applications, as well as a demonstrated desire to contribute to and learn about environmental remediation and/or Residential Construction.

Security clearance eligibility required: Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL\xe2\x80\x99s Historic Waste Program Management Office is in the beautiful and historic community of , Ontario. Roughly 100kms East of Toronto, Port Hope is located at the mouth of the Ganaraska River on the north shore of Lake Ontario, in the west end of Northumberland County. Basically, still close enough to the \xe2\x80\x9cBig City\xe2\x80\x9d without all the hassle of being in the \xe2\x80\x9cBig City\xe2\x80\x9d.

As a leader in environmental remediation at nuclear and radiologically contaminated sites, CNL is implementing the on behalf of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. The cleanup of historic Low Level Radioactive Waste by CNL in the communities of Port Hope and Port Granby in Ontario is a demonstration of Canada\xe2\x80\x99s commitment to the safe, long-term storage and management of nuclear waste.
