Duration: 4 months (beginning in May)

Discipline: College or University program in Biology, Environmental Science, Environmental Technology or Ecology majors

Year of study: Currently enrolled in at least the third year of study or higher

Location: Chalk River, ON

NOTE:

All students applying for student positions at CNL must be returning to full-time studies upon completion of their work term. Exceptions will be made for students who require a work term in order to graduate.

INTRO
The Environmental and Waste Technologies Branch (E&WT) at the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) conducts environmental research in support of the Federal Nuclear Science and Technology program and for the Canadian nuclear industry.

This is a very exciting opportunity for a young scientist and we look forward to working with the student hired as they grow their skills in our lab.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Gather and summarize biological and ecological data through literature review.
  • Create a database containing biological and ecological information found in the literature.
  • Conduct on-site field work to collect various environmental sample types.
  • Conduct on-site field surveys to assess impacts of bioremediation methods.
  • General laboratory duties, including processing and analysis of environmental samples.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Currently enrolled in at least the third year of study or higher at a college or university of recognized standing in a suitable program such as Biology, Environmental Science, Environmental Technology or Ecology.
  • Field work experience is essential, and the candidate must be physically able to work in a forest environment, as well as from a boat.
  • Laboratory work experience is essential, the candidate must be able to work safely in a laboratory environment and carefully follow a variety of procedures.
  • Experience conducting scientific literature reviews, and the capability to read and understand technical literature, is a must.
  • Excellent research and presentation skills and experience with related software such as Microsoft Excel, will also be considered when reviewing applications.
  • Strong vegetation and fungi identification and handling skills will be considered an asset for this position.
MAJORS
Applicants should be Biology, Environmental Science, Environmental Technology or Ecology majors in an undergraduate university or college program.
