Number of Positions: 2

Duration: 4 months (beginning in May 2023)

Discipline: Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Environmental Management or related fields

Year of study: Open to students who have completed their 1st year or higher

Location: Chalk River, ON

NOTE:

All students applying for student positions at CNL must be returning to full-time studies upon completion of their work term. Exceptions will be made for students who require a work term in order to graduate.

DUTIES

  • Assisting CNL in the preparation of a Species at Risk Annual Report;
  • Conducting data entry and analysis;
  • Assisting in the planning and execution of the 2023 field season;
  • Conducting field work (e.g. Chimney Swift, turtle species, bats, wolf) according to the protocols provided by CNL in remote locations (e.g. forested lands, wetlands);
  • Providing support for the installation of physical barriers such as silt fence, or support in the installation of heavy field equipment, and use of monitoring equipment such as power tools;
  • Providing technical reviews of Species at Risk documentation prepared by CNL;
  • Preparing communication and training material for CNL employees on the identification of Species at Risk; and,
  • Providing advice and guidance to the project leader on the Species at Risk work plan and inventory protocols.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Be part of a university program in environmental sciences, environmental studies, environmental management or related fields;
  • A good knowledge of the Species at Risk Act and Federal and Provincial environmental regulations;
  • A good knowledge of MapInfo or ArcGIS software;
  • Knowledge of species at risk identification, ecology, habitat description and major threats;
  • Be available to work evenings, weekends and to travel to other sites for short periods of time, as required;
  • Be able to work physically using different hand tools;
  • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft office software including Access, Excel and Word;
  • Excellent writing skills;
  • Be able to review, revise and interpret technical/scientific documents;
  • Good oral and written communication skills;
  • Knowledge of environmental monitoring;
  • Knowledge of radiation hazards, radiation protection practices and radiation protection principles;
  • Be able to work as part of a team and meet deadlines and schedules.
To be eligible for CNL summer student employment, you must be:
  • Enrolled to return to a post-secondary institution (college or university) in the following semester
  • Available to work from May until August 2023.
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada in accordance with Canadian Immigration laws
  • Must be able to successfully obtain and maintain a security clearance and reliability check
