Position Overview
The Youth Programs Team Lead, reporting to the Manager of Youth Programs and the Director of WAMY, is responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of the Y Way as well as planning, implementing, and evaluating the growth of YMCA Youth programs.
1. Program Development & Growth
Collaborate with the Youth Program Manager to plan, implement, and evaluate youth sport initiatives.
Identify gaps in existing programs and propose improvements or new opportunities.
Conduct community needs assessments using feedback from participants, parents, and staff.
Design and pilot new initiatives (e.g., movement-based classes, sport intro programs for younger age groups).
Build partnerships with schools, community organizations, and local groups to enhance programming reach.
2. Program Quality & Evaluation
Ensure high standards of instruction, safety, and participant engagement in alignment with YMCA and NCCP guidelines.
Contribute to the development and ongoing revision of age-appropriate lesson plans and progressions.
Promote program inclusivity, ensuring accessibility for children of all skill levels, backgrounds, and abilities.
Conduct observations, surveys, and assessments to evaluate program effectiveness.
Collect and report on participant feedback and outcomes to support data-informed improvements.
Assist in developing tools to track long-term success metrics such as attendance, retention, and satisfaction.
3. Leadership & Staff Development
Assist with recruiting, training, mentoring, and supervising part-time staff and volunteers.
Provide regular feedback to support staff growth and performance.
Develop and implement the Y Way handbook for Youth Program staff.
Support the use of the Y Way tool for staff evaluations.
Represent the youth program staff at Frontline Management Team meetings.
Help design and implement a succession plan for sustainable team development.
Foster a team culture that is inclusive, supportive, and aligned with YMCA values.
Contribute to staff scheduling and ensure adequate program coverage.
4. Coaching & Instruction
Serve as Head Coach for Youth Gymnastics and Dance Programs or other YMCA Youth Programs.
Deliver high-quality instruction and act as a role model for professional coaching standards.
Organize and lead end-of-term dance recitals to celebrate participant achievements and growth.
5. Marketing, Communications & Community Engagement
Support enrollment and retention efforts through marketing strategies such as social media, newsletters, and community outreach.
Contribute content for YMCA communications that highlight program features and participant stories.
Represent the YMCA at internal and external events to build relationships with families and the community.
Collaborate with internal departments and external partners to increase program visibility and impact.
6. Administrative Support & Operational Efficiency
Assist with program registration processes, scheduling, and incident documentation.
Respond to parent inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
Help improve administrative systems to ensure efficient and responsive program delivery.
Provide operational support and leadership coverage during the Youth Program Manager's absence or vacation periods.
General YMCA Responsibilities
Demonstrates appropriate behaviours in line with our mission, vision and values as reflected in our YMCA competencies; takes a member focused approach to increase their understanding of programs offered across the association. Represents the YMCA and the association in a professional manner.
Understands the legal responsibilities and moral imperative to report suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services.
Understands the importance of the volunteer staff partnership and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with members, volunteers, donors and staff.
Other duties as assigned.
Skills & Qualifications
16 years old (minimum age).
Previous experience in sport coaching required.
Workplace Standard First Aid is an asset.
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) certification is an asset.
Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication (verbal & written) with members, staff and volunteers.
Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity.
Flexibility regarding assigned hours of work - early mornings, days, evenings and weekends.
