POSITION SUMMARY



About VAFCS:

The Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society (VAFCS) has over 60 years of experience in providing culturally enhanced programs and services to urban Indigenous peoples in Vancouver. VAFCS is a charitable organization that emphasizes the philosophies and values of varied Indigenous cultures and traditions. The VAFCS works in partnership with community stakeholders in developing, building, and operating a small portfolio of affordable housing in addition to our community programs, services and social enterprises

The Vancouver Aboriginal Violence Prevention Program (VAVPP) is seeking a dedicated and passionate Youth Engagement Coordinator to lead efforts in engaging Indigenous youth through culturally safe, trauma- informed, community-centered programming. This role is primarily focus on recruiting Indigenous youths, facilitating workshops on gender-based violence (GBV), and supporting the VAVPP in youth related efforts and engagement that aims to promote education, leadership an advocacy.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with youth and bring facilitation skills grounded in strength-based approaches.

This position is open to students, provided they meet all job requirements and can complete the hours required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:



Youth Recruitment & Engagement



Actively recruit and build relationships with urban Indigenous youth in the Vancouver area. Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and safe environment that encourages youth participation and leadership.

Workshop Facilitation & Program Delivery



Be familiarized with previously prepared workshops for Indigenous youth on gender-based violence, healthy relationships, consent and other related topics. Work alongside other team members to deliver workshops to Indigenous youth.

Youth Support & Mentorship



Provide mentorship and guidance to youth participants. Offer referrals and support to youth who may be experiencing violence or trauma in partnership with appropriate VAFCS services.

Administrative & Organizational Duties



Participate in team meetings, training and events. Access to mentorship and debriefing supports. Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:



The successful candidate will be First Nations, Metis, or Inuit. Diploma, certificate, or coursework in youth work, Indigenous studies, social work, or a related field is considered an asset but not required. Class 4 or 5 BC Driver's license is considered an asset Minimum of 2 years of experience working with youth, preferably Indigenous youth. Demonstrated experience in group facilitation and workshop delivery. Understanding of gender-based violence, colonization, intergenerational trauma, and their impacts on Indigenous communities. Knowledge of trauma-informed and strength-based approaches. Strong communication and relationship-building skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team. A criminal record and vulnerable sector check will be required upon hire. Knowledge of Indigenous cultural practices, traditions, and protocols. Familiarity with Indigenous organizations and resources in Metro Vancouver. Experience organizing youth events, programs, or circles. Strong conflict resolution and crisis response skills. Comfort with social media and digital platforms for youth outreach.

REPORTING:



The Youth Engagement Coordinator reports directly to the Policy Analyst, Violence Prevention Program.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:



Based at the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society (VAFCS).

Some work will take place off-site in community settings.



Job Types: Part-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 8 months

Pay: From $27.00 per hour

Expected hours: 20 per week
