Position Summary:
As a Youth Basketball Coach for the JCC Warriors Learn to Play program at the Miles Nadal JCC, you will inspire a love of basketball and help young athletes develop their skills in a safe, fun, and inclusive environment. You will plan and lead engaging lessons, supervise participants, manage equipment, and ensure that classes run smoothly and on schedule. You will also communicate with parents or guardians, provide feedback, and ensure the well-being and timely departure of all participants.
Schedule:
Class Schedule & Assignments:
Coaches may be assigned one or more weekly classes, or work on an "as-needed" basis as substitutes.
Class offerings may change from session to session; continuity of a specific shift is not guaranteed.
Arrival & Class Preparation:
Arrive at least 10 minutes before class to set up, and remain 10 minutes after to tidy, put away equipment, and answer participant or parent/guardian questions.
Substitutions & Cancellations:
If unable to teach a scheduled class, arrange a substitute or contact the Manager of Recreational Programming for assistance with as much advance notice as possible.
Classes may be cancelled due to inclement weather or emergencies. For last-minute cancellations, coaches will be notified at least 3 hours in advance or compensated as if the class was taught.
Holidays & Meetings:
Classes may occur on public/statutory holidays or long weekends; pay remains the same if you teach on these days.
Attendance at required professional development or departmental meetings is paid at their meeting rate; optional All-Staff meetings are not compensated unless required.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
As a Youth Basketball Coach at the Miles Nadal JCC, you'll play an essential role in fostering a love of basketball, teaching fundamental skills, and building confidence in young athletes. We're looking for coaches who are not only passionate about the game but also committed to creating an inclusive, positive, and development-focused environment for every player.
Program Delivery & Coaching
Collaborate with the Technical Director to develop and deliver an age-appropriate, skill-based basketball curriculum.
Plan and lead engaging group basketball sessions for players of varying ages and abilities.
Teach proper technique, offering modifications to support individual learning and growth.
Assess player development regularly and adapt coaching strategies as needed.
Create a positive, fun, and inclusive atmosphere that emphasizes teamwork, skill-building, and a joy for the game
Player & Parent Engagement
Build strong relationships with players and parents through clear communication and approachability.
Foster a welcoming and judgment-free space where every participant feels valued and supported.
Engage with families before and after sessions, answering questions and sharing feedback.
Collaborate with parent-coaches by introducing yourself at the start of the season and maintaining open communication throughout.
Safety & Risk Management
Ensure a safe playing environment at all times by remaining vigilant and ready to respond to emergencies.
Follow all health, safety, and emergency procedures, and complete required reports (e.g., attendance, incidents/accidents) promptly.
Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviour to supervisory staff or authorities as needed.
Conduct monthly equipment checks and communicate any needs to the Manager of Recreational Programming.
Administrative & Organizational Duties
Provide at least 48 hours' notice to the Technical Director if you're unable to attend a scheduled session.
Maintain a clean, organized, and professional program space, ensuring equipment is set up and stored properly.
Promote Miles Nadal JCC programs and services when appropriate.
Stay informed on department programs, policies, and emergency procedures.
Represent the Miles Nadal JCC positively and professionally at all times.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Expectations:
All MNjcc coaches are expected to uphold professional and ethical standards in their interactions with participants, colleagues, and the community.
Professional Communication:
Your email may be shared internally with other athletics coaches to coordinate substitutes. Use of this email for unrelated purposes (e.g., solicitation) is prohibited and may result in disciplinary action.
Class Attendance:
Track and report class attendance accurately to assist MNjcc in maintaining program records.
Safety & Emergency Preparedness:
Be familiar with MNjcc emergency procedures (evacuation, lockdown, etc.) for your teaching location and assist as needed in the event of an emergency..
Professional Conduct & No Solicitation:
While you may operate independent businesses outside of your MNjcc work, promoting those services to MNjcc patrons or creating client lists from MNjcc members and guests is strictly prohibited.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Coaching & Basketball Experience
Strong technical knowledge of basketball and ability to demonstrate skills at an advanced level.
Minimum 2 years of experience coaching youth basketball
or equivalent relevant experience
Experience coaching players of varying ages and skill levels in group settings.
Ability to demonstrate and perform basketball techniques while instructing.
Skills & Attributes
Exceptional communication and customer service skills.
Passion for working with children and fostering a positive, inclusive sport environment.
Ability to work afternoons, evenings, and weekends as required.
Reliable, enthusiastic, and able to adapt to dynamic program needs.
Certifications & Requirements
Current CPR-C/AED and Standard First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain certification.
Successful completion of a Vulnerable Sector Check (at candidate's expense) as a condition of employment.
Legally eligible to work in Canada.
Other Information:
MNjcc Payroll is run bi-weekly (two-week pay periods) with paydays every other week on Friday. Paydays are nine days after the two-week date period they cover.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to work in a fast-paced, busy environment.
Ability to perform basketball activities for the duration of a class, which may include, but are not limited to: standing, walking, balancing, running, crawling, and kneeling
Ability to lift up to 45 lbs
