Immigrant Youth Crime Prevention Program \xe2\x80\x93 Youth Advocate Full Time (40hrs/week), Term Certain Position Until December 31 2023

The Program

The Immigrant Youth Crime Prevention program offers community-based, one-to-one support utilizing a mentorship model to support immigrant youth in navigating the challenges of transitioning to Canadian culture. The program provides advocacy, support and mentorship for youth 12 to 24 years old who are struggling with a variety of social and emotional issues including strained family relationships, negative peer relationships, school challenges and unhealthy risk taking. Youth are provided with the necessary support to develop pro-social reactions to conflict, to address day-to-day challenges, and to make appropriate choices which allow for positive contributions to family, school, and community.
The Position The Immigrant Youth Crime Prevention Advocate will work in an integrated and collaborative way with the Community Outreach Services Team, wider CJHS Team and the community to ensure that clients enhance their coping skills, are connected to appropriate resources in the community and develop pro-social skills to engage positive change. This includes advocating for clients with community services such as education, employment, justice and leisure including cultural connections; supporting youth in healthy family and peer engagement; and assisting with short- and long-term goal planning.
As an ideal candidate, your qualifications include:

  • Solid case management and social work skills
  • Crisis prevention/intervention skills
  • Knowledge of the Youth Criminal Justice System
  • Valid driver\xe2\x80\x99s license and reliable transportation
  • Post-secondary education in a relevant discipline (i.e. human services, child and youth care, etc.)
  • Brain Story Certification considered an asset.
  • A current criminal record check (CPIC) and Child Intervention Check (where applicable) are required (within the past three months).
  • Successful candidates are required to be full vaccinated against COVID-19. Where the candidate has not obtained the vaccine, the candidate will be considered on an exceptional, and case by case basis; CJHS will adhere with its obligations under the Alberta Human Rights Act.
