As a Head Hockey Coach, you'll work closely with our Program Manager to design and deliver practice plans that are fun, structured, and focused on the fundamentals of the game. Just as important, you'll serve as a role model and mentor, helping players grow both on and off the ice.
This is a seasonal role that involves coaching Wolves Hockey teams through practices and games. Practices are held on weekdays, while games and tournaments take place on weekends, so flexibility is required. Your leadership and dedication during this period will be key to the team's success--and we're excited to see the energy and expertise you'll bring.
Education & Qualifications
Working towards or completion of a degree/diploma in Physical Education, Sport and Recreation, Kinesiology, Education, Sociology, Psychology, Early Childhood Education, or a related field from a recognized post-secondary institution.
Experience coaching or leading youth sport teams, or significant playing experience.
Moderate skating ability is required (for Ice Hockey positions).
Valid driver's licence and access to a vehicle.
Current (or ability to obtain) clear Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
Standard First Aid and CPR certification, or willingness to obtain promptly.
Recognized coaching certifications in hockey are considered an asset.
Comfort with technology (e.g., Google Meet, Connecteam) is considered an asset.
Responsibilities
Design and deliver structured training sessions for youth aged U11-U18, aligning with the Wolves Hockey Club's coaching philosophy and Free Play for Kids' mission and vision.
Lead practices, games, drills, and activities that foster safe, inclusive, and engaging environments where youth can play, belong, and grow.
Develop players' hockey skills and prepare them to compete in leagues and tournaments.
Manage participant registration and ensure accurate and timely enrollment.
Maintain effective communication with participants and families through timely updates, addressing inquiries, and creating clear channels of information.
Conduct formal and informal skills assessments to track participant development.
Demonstrate adaptability by responding effectively to changing circumstances and new challenges.
Travel to various locations in Edmonton and transport necessary equipment.
Model Free Play's core values in all interactions with participants, families, staff, and community partners.
Engage with youth from diverse backgrounds, serving as a mentor and positive role model.
Support the Program Manager/Coordinator with community partnerships, equipment inventory, and player identification and recruitment.
Participate in special events, projects, and other program initiatives as needed.
Complete additional training and certifications as required through Free Play's training program (e.g., Making Ethical Decisions, Safe Sport courses).

Position Conditions
This is a seasonal position of approximately 10 hours per week.
