The Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road (TCWR), is an annual ice road that has been built for decades to service mines and exploration activities in the Northwest Territories; today, primarily to provide re-supply to the Joint Venture initiative between the Diavik, Ekati, and Gahcho Kue Diamond Mine Sites. The TCWR begins at Tibbitt Lake (end of Highway 4, near Yellowknife, NT) and runs north for approximately 400 kms (approx. 85% over ice and 15% over land portages between lakes). Three maintenance camps along the winter road provide accommodations and meals for maintenance & security teams. Construction of the road commences in mid-December with the road opening approximately late-January/early-February. Winter road construction crews monitor and maintain the road to ensure that it meets safety requirements for freight loads.Safety/Security (source https://jvtcwinterroad.ca/about/#facts)
