Position Working within the ABMI?s Science Centre under the supervision of the Senior Wetland Ecologist, the Wetland Ecologist is responsible for analyzing wetland data to support environmental management throughout Alberta. Duties The Wetland Ecologist is responsible for 1. Analytical Applications. Works both independently as well as with ABMI staff and project collaborators to conduct necessary project work:
  • Organizes taxonomic, community, and habitat data for subsequent analyses (e.g., data upload, data quality assessment and quality control, data wrangling);
  • Analyzes biodiversity data collected by the ABMI at wetland sites to estimate the occurrence and abundance of numerous plant and invertebrate species, including trends over time;
  • Assesses relationships between species occurrence / abundance and human development;
  • Integrates ABMI data with information from other sources such as government and industry monitoring data to address questions of interest; and
  • Applies both traditional statistical analyses as well as develops new analytical approaches to address the ABMI?s large and complex biodiversity datasets;
2. Program Operations & Refinement. Supports planning and delivery of the wetland program and develops and evaluates options to address program challenges:
  • Occasionally visits field monitoring sites throughout Alberta to collect data and/or test existing or new protocols; and
  • Critically reviews existing literature, including academic journals and other sources, for information needed to support and implement ABMI projects; and
  • Develops and reports quality control procedures for ABMI data, analyses and modeling; and
  • Works with government and industry technical representatives to explore the application of ABMI data and data products to planning, policy development, and environmental resource management.
3. Collaborative wetland programs. Supports the development of wetland programs as they support the needs of end-users, ABMI partners, and ABMI?s Strategic Plan:
  • Works with government, industry, non-government organizations, and the scientific community to understand the knowledge needs of the natural resource management system;
  • Fosters and maintains ongoing relationships with multiple external project collaborators;
  • Engages end-users in dialogue about the potential benefits of ABMI data and knowledge products; and
  • Maintains ongoing relationships across multiple ABMI centres to ensure working knowledge of advancements within the organization?s wetland science and information management.
4. Knowledge Dissemination. Facilitates direct and indirect understanding of ABMI knowledge among environmental resource managers, policy analysts, and the public:
  • Provides summaries of ABMI projects, including communicating the strengths and limitations of specific data products;
  • Develops and delivers project presentation material;
  • Communicates scientific results and project outcomes in written and oral form to non-technical and technical audiences, including peer-reviewed publications; and
  • Supports ABMI communication and reporting initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
  • B.Sc. in wetland ecology or related discipline;
  • Greater than 3 years working experience in the field of wetland ecology or natural resource management; and
  • Excellent organizational, writing, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Must have a clear drivers abstract.


Preferred Qualifications Preference will be given to those with:
  • Experience with geographic information systems (GIS);
  • Knowledge of basic statistical analysis, preferably with experience in R and/or Python;
  • Experience working in Alberta wetland ecosystems with a basic knowledge of Alberta wetland taxa;
  • Research experience in wetland community ecology and modeling wetland species responses to human disturbances;
  • Experience working on multidisciplinary teams;
  • Long-term career interest in promoting sustainable resource management;
  • A self-motivated and proactive approach to solving problems;
  • Demonstrated commitment to ABMI?s values, vision, and mission; and
  • An interest in continuous learning.
