Natural Resource Solutions Inc. (NRSI) is an environmental consulting firm that provides specialized ecological consulting services across Canada. Our team of over 70 full-time staff comprises a group of highly trained terrestrial, wetland, and aquatic biologists with expertise in a range of ecological disciplines. NRSI\xe2\x80\x99s project portfolio is diverse and includes ecology-based support for municipal infrastructure, land development, and renewable energy projects, as well as specialized services such as species status assessments and recovery planning, conservation and reclamation, wetland assessments, and permitting and authorization support. Our permanent office locations in Waterloo, Ontario and Calgary, Alberta, combined with several field office locations, actively support our work across Canada.

NRSI is expanding our existing and new client relationships and project portfolio across Canada. To support this ongoing and projected growth, NRSI is currently looking for an experienced Senior Ecologist to play a leadership role in our Waterloo office. This is a fulltime/permanent position with a target start date of fall 2023, but is flexible depending on the availability of the preferred candidate.

This position provides a unique opportunity for a motivated individual to play a leadership role within an established environmental consulting firm.

The successful applicant will be expected to lead and contribute to business development activities, such as responding to new and existing clients, identifying new opportunities tailored to their expertise or interest, preparing proposals and cost estimates. The successful applicant will also be expected to take on management of existing and new projects including budgeting and client and agency relationships. They will work with staff, clients and regulatory agencies, provide technical expertise in one or more areas of ecology, supervise and mentor junior staff, and will contribute to the leadership and culture at NRSI. They will have opportunities to participate in field work, research, study design, mentor junior staff and further their own professional development.

The successful candidate will be based in Waterloo and will work closely with local colleagues as well as other NRSI offices. Hybrid work options are available, and flexible to suit individual\xe2\x80\x99s work-life balance.

Experience and Qualifications

Candidates for this position should have a minimum of 10 years of applied natural heritage experience working in Ontario. The candidate should have familiarity with federal, provincial and municipal natural heritage policies, including recent changes, as well as standard natural heritage guidance documents. They should have experience working with municipalities, Ministry of Environment Conservation and Parks, Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, and Conservation Authorities. Excellent communication and leadership skills and the ability to foster team building as well as work independently are required. A proven track record of securing, managing and completing natural environment projects, including report writing, is essential.

Specific expectations of the successful candidate include, but are not limited to:

• A B.Sc. or M.Sc. or similar degree in ecology, environmental studies or similar area of study;
• A minimum of 10 years of experience with demonstrated proposal preparation, project management and supervision of staff;
• Technical expertise in one or more ecological disciplines, such as wetland ecology, botany, ecological restoration, wildlife ecology, or other;
• Demonstrated knowledge and familiarity with local, provincial, and federal natural heritage guidelines, policies, and legislation;
• Knowledgeable representation at client and agency meetings, industry conferences, and public information sessions;
• Preparation of high-quality technical reports in accordance with relevant guidance documents and policies;
• Supervision and mentorship of technical staff and junior project managers.

Salary

The total value of the annual monetary remuneration package is estimated based on base salary, average annual profit sharing, typical performance bonuses, and matched RRSP contributions and will be determined based on the experience of the successful candidate.
