Modern Elevator
THE POSITION
The Welding Lead plays a critical role in the fabrication of quality elevator assemblies we manufacture. They will be a key member of the production team and will report to the Production Manager. This position will oversee the welding operations, ensures compliance with industry standards, and collaborates closely with engineering department. The ideal candidate is a highly skilled welder with leadership experience, has deep knowledge of fabrication processes, and shows strong commitment to safety and quality.
Duties and responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:
Welding & Fabrication
Perform high-quality MIG and TIG welding on carbon steel, stainless steel and components used in elevator systems (cabs, frames, sling assemblies, brackets, structural supports, and hoist way components)
Competent in GMAW and FCAW processes to CSA 178.2 level II, and supporting CSA W47.1
Review the inbound welding schedule with other Production team, advise on optimal ordering/workload
Demonstrate responsibility by ensuring outputs meet established standards and organizational expectations
Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols with precision
Fabricate complex assemblies and work with jigs/fixtures to maintain production accuracy
Complete welds in all positions as required (flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead)
Conduct visual and non-destructive inspections to ensure weld integrity
Leadership & Team Oversight
Lead, mentor, and train welding staff in best practices and safe welding techniques
Complete daily tasks based on project priority and production schedule
Support new welder onboarding, skills development, and continuous improvement
Provide constructive feedback and participate in performance evaluations
Quality Assurance & Safety
Ensure welding activities meet or exceed company quality standards, CSA requirements, and elevator industry regulatory guidelines
Maintain accurate weld documentation, including inspection reports and WPS (Welding Procedure Specifications)
Conduct regular equipment checks and ensure all welding tools, PPE, and machines are maintained in safe working condition
Enforce health and safety protocols, including WHMIS, lockout/tagout procedures, and safe material handling
Production Coordination
Work closely with production management to meet deadlines and optimize workflow
Identify fabrication challenges and collaborate with engineering to resolve technical issues
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance productivity and reduce waste
Monitor material usage and support inventory control for welding consumables, gas cylinders, steel, and related materials
THE QUALIFICATIONS
Required
Red Seal Welder Certification or equivalent (CWB certification required)
5+ years of welding experience in manufacturing or heavy fabrication
Strong proficiency in MIG and TIG welding; ability to produce high-quality welds consistently
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and welding symbols
Experience working with structural steel and precision-fabricated components
Thorough understanding of welding safety standards and regulatory requirements
Strong problem-solving abilities with a hands-on, proactive approach
Experience in the elevator, vertical transportation, or related mechanical manufacturing industry
Familiarity with lean manufacturing or continuous improvement methodologies considered an asset
Knowledge of metal forming, CNC equipment, or machining processes
Forklift or overhead crane certification
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand for extended periods and work in various positions
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs as required
Exposure to welding environments (heat, sparks, noise, PPE requirements)
Manual dexterity and steady hands for precise welding tasks
