Weed Inspector - Municipal Enforcement Officer I up to 11 months

By focusing on one area, you will enhance your public relations skills as you investigate and resolve a high volume of complaints.   • Investigate and enforce Municipal Bylaws and Provincial Acts
  • Inspect properties for noxious weed violations
  • Implement established procedures for noxious weed control
  • Issue violation warnings, tickets and 545 Municipal Government Act orders
  • Check computer maps for property locations
  • Explain legislative provisions and enforcement process to citizens and business owners
  • Address and respond appropriately to public inquiries on weed related matters
  • Liaise with other City Departments to resolve enforcement issues
  • Perform administrative and other related duties as required

Qualifications:
  • Completion of a 2 year diploma in the law enforcement field from a provincially recognized institute or college, or higher or equivalent
  • Minimum of 1 year of customer service experience, including some experience in bylaw and/or law enforcement
  • Experience and/or training in plant and/or weeds identification is an asset
  • Knowledge of computer systems, databases and information gathering protocols
  • Knowledge of bylaw enforcement officer powers and authority, including knowledge of plants and weed species
  • Ability to objectively investigate, collect evidence, analyze information and present findings
  • Ability to understand court proceedings and rules of evidence
  • Ability to strictly adhere to parameters and remedies as outlined in municipal and provincial legislation
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret and apply regulatory legislation that can withstand legal and court challenges
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and work independently as well as part of a team
  • Strong customer services skills and the ability to exercise good judgment and resolve confrontational situations
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to resolve conflict with citizens in difficult situations while ensuring fair and consistent enforcement of bylaws
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR Level C is a requirement of this position
  • Hire is dependent on Police Information Check including a Vulnerable Sector check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and there may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver\'s license (or provincial equivalent). Must obtain business auto insurance for personal vehicle use on City business
