Our Sudbury Operations have been in existence for more than 100 years. With five mines, a mill, a smelter, a refinery and nearly 4,000 employees it is also one of the largest integrated mining complexes in the world. Sudbury is also home to several administrative sites serving both the Ontario Operations as well as all our North Atlantic Operations. Port Colborne is home to our Nickel Refinery where raw materials from our Sudbury operations are processed into electrocobalt and precious metals and serves as a distribution centre for finished nickel products. Our Team: The Water Treatment Plant Team provides safe supply of potable water to the community and Vale operations. Members of this team support multiple operating plants to ensure the supply of safe drinking water as well as the operation of industrial wastewater plants for us to meet our environmental commitments. Team members are also involved in the development of long-term and short-term initiatives, practices, and procedures. The Opportunity We are currently seeking a Water Treatment Plant Operator. Local 2020-05 to join our team in Sudbury. The Water Treatment Plant Operator\'s role is critical to the operation of Vale\'s water and wastewater treatment facilities and remote pumping and control system. We require a Water Treatment Plant Operator with experience operating and maintaining a Drinking Water Plant and Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plants. Although previous experience in mining or an industrial setting is considered an asset, we also appreciate that diversity of thought comes from our differences \xe2\x80\x93 and that\'s what makes us great! Accountabilities In this position you will:

  • Follow Safety Plan developed for department.
  • Responsible for care and efficient operation of Vale WTP\'s through performance of a variety of skilled and technical work in operating, maintaining, repairing, recording treatment plant operations on assigned rotating shifts. Work can include covering a large working area, which contains several operating areas from storage tanks, booster stations and dam control structures during an assigned shift. Employees in this class normally work independently on the basis of general and specific instruction for the day.
  • Keep current on Vale policies, legislated standards, design criteria and industry best practices related to potable drinking water production and industrial wastewater treatment.
  • Ensure all water management system operations are in compliance with applicable regulations and permits.
  • Liaise with Vale Environmental Control and Government Agencies and agents.
  • Act as management\'s OIC (Operator in Charge) and maintain all required operating licenses as required by regulations according to plant classification.
  • Work collaterally with members of his/her work group and cross functionally with all other areas of the operations.
  • Demonstrate a concern for Safety, Health, and Environment.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to recognize hazards within an industrial workplace and understands his or her role in assessing and managing risk.
  • Strong ability to work cooperatively within a team environment.
  • Other duties and tasks as needed or assigned by management.
  • Valid Driver\'s License is required
Qualifications and Specific Skills: Education: Graduate Environmental or Chemical Engineering Technologist or equivalent. Valid MECP certification minimum Level I Water Treatment is required. Experience: The ideal candidate will possess 2 - 4 years of relevant experience. Required Skills:
  • Computer Skills: Proficiency with SCADA and HMI control equipment, working knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Analytical: Ability to read and understand chemical formulas and dosage calculations and basic ability to follow electrical/mechanical prints and drawings.
  • Process: Thorough knowledge of water treatment systems and typical industry equipment associated with water treatment and supply systems.
  • Job Knowledge: Working knowledge of applicable provincial legislation including but not limited to OWRA, SDWA, OHSA, Regs. 170/03, 128/04, 319/08, 903/90, and DWQMS is preferred.
  • Innovation/creativity on an ongoing basis to assist in modifying or restructuring operating procedures or to develop more effective methods or techniques.
  • Ability to perform the work assigned with minimal supervision, with only unusual problems being referred to the supervisor. Ability to respond to emergency situations.
