The watchman is responsible for the safety, security, and cleanliness of the ship during periods when the regular crew is not on board. This includes conducting surveillance rounds, performing housekeeping duties, assisting with technical operations, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. The role acts under the authority of the Captain and Chief Engineer and must remain on board unless officially relieved.
Major Responsibilities
Make beds and clean cabins for the Captain, Chief Engineer, and Officers
Clean bathrooms and replenish supplies (i.e., towels, toilet paper, soap)
Sweep, vacuum, or mop floors and dust and wipe desks
Empty trash bins daily
Change bedding weekly or as needed
Wash and store dishes and clean dining areas
Participate in general and special cleaning operations as required
Conduct fire and security rounds every 2 hours using a punch clock
Inspect engine room, water tank, and bow thruster compartments
Lock living quarters during rounds to prevent unauthorized access
Monitor moorings and gangway, especially during bad weather
Turn on exterior lighting at nightfall and off at sunrise
Report suspicious or dangerous activities
Assist with moorings and electrical cables during departures and arrivals
Help the Engineer with technical tasks
Store provisions and bedding when delivered
Monitor heating and ventilation systems, especially in the engine room
Relay instructions from the Captain to crew members
Notify the Captain or First Officer of crew absences or irregularities
Stay informed of schedule changes and assist accordingly
Working Conditions
The role is shift-based and must remain on board during service hours unless officially replaced
The role is required to work onboard a ship, including engine rooms, cabins, and exterior decks
The role must work in all weather conditions, including winter (i.e., clearing snow and ice)
The role must be able to move throughout the ship and perform physical tasks
Requirements
High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED)
Ability to operate heating and ventilation systems
Familiarity with basic fire-fighting equipment and emergency exits
Understanding of shipboard safety and security procedures
Must be rested, alert, sober, and reliable
Able to work independently and follow detailed instructions
Physically capable of performing manual tasks and rounds
Fire safety and emergency response training
Previous experience in custodial, maintenance, or maritime roles
Experience working in isolated or self-managed environments
Any experience/education/skills/knowledge for these above would be considered as an asset
