Position Overview



The

Warming Centre Shift Supervisor

is responsible for leading operations during their assigned shift, ensuring the safety, comfort, and dignity of all guests and team members. This frontline leadership role includes supervising staff and volunteers, coordinating service delivery, and maintaining a calm, organized environment. The Supervisor also ensures policies are followed, responds to incidents or crises as they arise, and fosters a compassionate, respectful space for individuals seeking relief from the cold.

Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Staff Coordination



Provide on-shift supervision and support to staff, security, and volunteers to ensure safe, compassionate, and effective service delivery. Foster a collaborative and respectful team culture through mentorship, coaching, and real-time feedback. Lead pre- and post-shift briefings to communicate updates, assign roles, and debrief after shifts.

Operational Oversight



Oversee daily operations of the Warming Centre during assigned shifts, ensuring adherence to organizational policies and procedures. Support setup and closing routines, including guest intake, supply management, and facility organization. Monitor the safety, cleanliness, and overall atmosphere of the space, addressing issues promptly.

Guest Services & Support



Create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all guests. Respond to guest concerns with empathy, professionalism, and de-escalation techniques. Support guests in accessing basic needs and connect them to community resources such as food, hygiene, medical, or housing supports.

Crisis Management & Emergency Response



Serve as the lead contact during emergencies or high-risk situations, coordinating with security and emergency services as required. Ensure all safety and emergency procedures are followed. Document and report incidents accurately and promptly.

Community & Partner Collaboration



Work collaboratively with on-site partners and community service providers to coordinate guest care. Represent the Warming Centre's mission and values in interactions with external stakeholders.

Administrative Duties



Maintain detailed and accurate shift records, including attendance, incidents, and supply use. Complete and submit shift reports summarizing key activities, challenges, and observations. Report low supplies or maintenance needs to ensure smooth operations.

Program Support & Improvement



Identify service delivery challenges and recommend improvements to leadership. Gather informal feedback from guests and staff to inform ongoing program development. Contribute to refining shift procedures and guest support strategies.

Qualifications



Experience:

Minimum 1 year in a supervisory role within a social services, shelter, or outreach setting. Experience with individuals facing homelessness and substance use challenges preferred.

Leadership Skills:

Proven ability to lead and motivate diverse teams in fast-paced environments. Strong decision-making and conflict-resolution abilities.

Communication:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with guests, staff, and community partners.

Training:

Trauma-informed care, conflict resolution, and harm reduction training preferred (training can be provided). First Aid, CPR, and Naloxone certification are assets.

Knowledge:

Familiarity with issues related to homelessness, mental health, and substance use, and awareness of local community resources.

Attributes:

Compassionate, organized, and proactive, with a strong commitment to equity and inclusion.

Physical Requirements



Ability to stand, walk, and move around the facility for extended periods. Ability to assist with setup and breakdown of resources, including lifting light to moderate loads.

Additional Information



Flexibility may be required, including additional hours or on-call responsibilities. The Shift Supervisor must adhere to confidentiality standards and uphold the organization's code of conduct.
