Volunteer Firefighters are members of a team who play a key role in the delivery of fire and emergency services to the Regional District. Volunteer Firefighters respond to fires, rescues, medical aid, hazardous materials, and a host of other calls to aid the public. The number of responses will vary from department to department and from year to year. On average, the Witless Bay Fire Department responds to approximately 150-250 calls for service per year. Service as a Volunteer Firefighter requires serious commitment and takes a great deal of time and dedication. Careful consideration of all our components of service should be undertaken and this application manual has been designed to provide information that will assist you in determining whether volunteer firefighting is a suitable pursuit for you. You must be able to follow and act on complex verbal and written instructions in high stress situations. To ensure that all members of the Fire Department are prepared to deliver the best level of services required, training standards have been developed to provide each member with the needed skills, knowledge, and abilities necessary to deliver fire and emergency services to the residents of the municipality. We train every Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Members are expected to attend a minimum of 50% of training nights per calendar year. Please note special considerations are made for rotational workers. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Applicants must provide the following items, which are required at various stages throughout the recruitment process. \xc2\xb7 Proof of valid Newfoundland driver\xe2\x80\x99s license (minimum class 5) and a current abstract must be provided (not required to apply) \xc2\xb7 Medical Examination Report, completed and signed by the applicant\xe2\x80\x99s Doctor (not required to apply) \xc2\xb7 Applicants must be 19 years of age or older \xc2\xb7 A clear vulnerable sector check & criminal background check (not required to apply) \xc2\xb7 Live in the local response district boundaries \xc2\xb7 Must have access to a car & cell phone Applications will be reviewed with priority being given to those who demonstrate the following: \xc2\xb7 Employment or residence within the municipality or reasonable response time to the fire station \xc2\xb7 Current first aid and CPR certificates \xc2\xb7 Valid driver\'s license with a clean abstract \xc2\xb7 Permission to leave place of employment to respond to alarms \xc2\xb7 Local area shift workers \xc2\xb7 Previous Fire Department experience \xc2\xb7 Demonstrated commitment (ie. volunteer service) \xc2\xb7 Bilingual (French/Other) \xc2\xb7 Related experience (Nursing, EMS, Mechanical Trades) \xc2\xb7 Previous applicable training (ie.
