Job Description

The Kitimat Museum & Archives is an independent, community-based, not-for-profit organization that preserves, interprets, and shares the cultural and natural heritage of Kitimat and the surrounding region. We are seeking a welcoming, organized, and community-minded Visitor Services & Retail Coordinator to join our team.

As the first point of contact for visitors, this position plays a vital role in shaping the Museum experience. The Coordinator provides outstanding customer service, oversees daily gift shop and consignment gallery operations, and supports Museum events and administrative functions. This is a hands-on, visitor-facing role ideal for someone who enjoys working with the public and coordinating engaging retail and cultural spaces.

Key Responsibilities



Visitor Experience



Welcome and assist visitors, providing information about exhibitions, programs, and local attractions. Respond to in-person, telephone, and email inquiries, directing them to the appropriate staff member when necessary. Promote Museum membership, events, and educational opportunities. Ensure the reception and public areas are tidy, welcoming, and well presented.

Retail & Consignment Gallery Coordination



Oversee daily operations of the Museum's gift shop and consignment gallery. Provide excellent customer service and assist visitors in selecting unique local art, books, and souvenirs. Manage inventory levels, including ordering, receiving, pricing, and displaying merchandise. Maintain accurate consignment records and prepare artist payments under the guidance of the Manager, Finance & Administration. Work with local artisans and suppliers to select merchandise that reflects the Museum's mandate and community character. Assist in maintaining and upgrading the point-of-sale system.

Administration & Museum Support



Record daily visitor statistics. Maintain accurate inventory reports. Support the preparation and posting of event materials and promotional displays. Assist with the setup, hosting, and cleanup of Museum events and exhibition openings. Support Museum staff with general office and administrative tasks as needed. Follow safety and security procedures for front-of-house operations.

Qualifications



High school diploma or equivalent (post-secondary education in administration, tourism, or museum studies is an asset). Minimum three years of experience in customer service, retail, or visitor services. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a warm, professional demeanour. Proficiency with point-of-sale and basic computer software (Word, Excel, email). Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple tasks. Interest in local history, culture, and the arts. Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team. Flexibility to assist with occasional evening or weekend events.

Compensation & Benefits
