Haahuupayak School is a First Nations independent school located on Tseshaht First Nation Reserve in the beautiful Alberni Valley. We invite applications from individuals with strong effective leadership skills to support a positive and healthy learning environment for our school.
Founded in 1976, the school operates under the direction of Haahuupayak Society's Board of Directors. Tseshaht First Nation is one of 14 tribes in the Nuuchahnulth Territories. The school community is nestled adjacent to the city of Port Alberni, which has a population of approximately 18,000.
The school has an average student enrolment of 155 and delivers the current BC Curriculum to its Kindergarten to Grade 7 students. At Haahuupayak school, inclusive education and a vibrant culture and language program are the foundational pillars that guide our practice.
At Haahuupayak, it is our goal to provide an education that meets educational needs of today, in a manner consistent with Nuuchahnulth cultural teachings, haahuupa, meaning "continuous teaching with care."

POSITION TITLE: Vice Principal of Haahuupayak School
REPORTING TO: Principal

POSITION SUMMARY
The Vice Principal is responsible for the supporting the development and management of school administrative and education policies, curriculum development and delivery, supervision, evaluation and development of school employees and the management of the school building and facilities.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Haahuupayak Personnel and Haahuupayak Operational School policies, standards, governing regulations and procedures
Collaborates with parents, staff and the community to enhance student achievement and competence;
Applies awareness and sensitivity to current educational practices and the changing nature of instruction;
Encourages development of knowledge and application of current education research regarding the teaching and learning of literacy and numeracy;
Fosters a team environment as a team-builder and team-player;
Demonstrated knowledge and implementation of best practices supporting student engagement, learning, curriculum and assessment strategies and practices;
Commits to school/community involvement;
Excellent organizational and communication skills;
Knowledge of First Nations culture and willingness to work with all communities;
Fulfills school contractual and budgetary matters in accordance with guiding policy and procedure
Provide leadership support for the planning, development and implementation of the school's curriculum and language and culture program
Supports the development long- and short-range plans, goals and objectives through the implementation of Haahuupayuk strategic plan goals and directions
Performs other school administrative and teaching responsibilities as assigned by the Principal.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION/TRAINING/CERTIFICATION
A Master's degree in education or a related area or Bachelor's degree and 5 years recent related experience,
Valid Certification, or eligible for certification, with the BC Teacher Regulation Branch
Preference may be given to candidates with direct experience working in Nuu-chah-nulth or other First Nations schools
Preference may be given to applicants who identify as Nuu-chah-nulth or other First Nations ancestry
EXPERIENCE
Record of exemplary administration as a school Vice Principal
Record of exemplary teaching at a variety of grade levels, preferable K-7
Demonstrated cultural competence with First Nations education teaching and/or leadership
Demonstrated ability as an effective instructional leader, with successful school leadership experience;
Experience working in an Independent First Nations Schools an asset
Elementary school experience preferred
Cooperative team building an asset
