About the role
The UX/UI Designer plays a critical role in delivering digital capabilities and product design. This is a remote, part-time independent contractor role working primarily within the AST time zone. The role takes a human-centric and opinionated approach to technology and its role in society today. You will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to discover, prototype, design, and create experiences that drive meaningful impact for our clients, their employees, and their customers.
This position is open to remote candidates in the AST time zone in Canada.
What you'll do
Oversee the strategic design and user-experience practices, frameworks, and utilities adopted for client engagements.
Create, develop, and oversee the standardization of internal knowledge and templates for the UX practice at each stage of an engagement.
Produce, and present user experience deliverables with limited oversight, including but not limited to sitemaps, wireframes, prototypes, experience strategy documentation, process flows, and user journey maps.
Lead, execute, and participate in discovery activities such as design workshops, stakeholder interviews, accessibility audits, expert reviews, and competitive reviews.
Conduct user research activities such as user testing, persona development, and user journeys, including research that considers users with diverse abilities and assistive technology needs.
Translate requirements into style guides, design systems, design patterns, and attractive user interfaces, ensuring accessibility is embedded by design.
Ensure design optimization for all screen sizes, speed, scalability, and accessibility compliance.
Optimize existing user interface designs, including remediating accessibility issues related to color contrast, typography, interaction states, and navigation.
Effectively communicate user research, information architecture, accessibility considerations, and design rationale with clients and internal teams.
Collaborate within multi-disciplinary teams to create innovative, best-in-class, customer-centric solutions.
Actively contribute to sales activities and presales proposals, including articulating accessibility value and requirements when relevant.
Collaborate and contribute to asset creation, production, and enhancement of creative visuals.
Support the creation of marketing and sales assets, including visual graphic design, diagrams, iconography, slide decks, and document branding.
Uphold and ensure the highest level of quality across all design and user experience deliverables for internal and external clients, including adherence to accessibility standards and best practices.
Other duties as assigned within the scope of a part-time contractor engagement.
Requirements:
4+ years of experience creating and optimizing digital user experiences across websites, marketing, and applications.
Demonstrated experience designing for web and mobile using progressive and responsive design layouts.
In-depth, practical design experience using tools such as Figma, Sketch, or similar, including Adobe Creative Suite.
Demonstrated experience designing accessible digital experiences aligned with WCAG 2.1 (or later) standards.
Hands-on experience using accessibility evaluation tools and techniques, such as contrast ratio analyzers, color-blindness simulators, keyboard navigation testing, and screen-reader considerations.
Ability to lead user research, user testing, and accessibility workshops or reviews.
Ability to map extensive end-to-end client journeys, including accessibility and inclusive design considerations.
Strong ability to manage change and stakeholder expectations within defined scope, timelines, and a part-time contractor capacity.
Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders to establish trust and rapport, including explaining accessibility requirements and trade-offs.
Ability to clearly discuss and explain design options and recommendations.
Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Portfolio of UX/UI design work for web and mobile platforms, including examples demonstrating accessible or inclusive design practices is required.
Basic HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript knowledge is considered an asset, including an understanding of how design decisions impact semantic markup and accessibility
