The Department of Physics & Astronomy in the Faculty of Science invites applications for a UVIT Science Support specialist. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 15 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Principal Investigators in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Calgary and the Herzberg Institute for Astrophysics, the UVIT Science Support specialist is part of the UVIT project, UVIT is a space telescope which was launched in fall 2015 on board the ASTROSAT spacecraft.

The sucessful incumbent\'s primary purpose is to be a key contributor to the support operations of the scientific use of the UVIT telescope. This will include developing and maintaining analysis software, and training of others to achieve the science goals of the UVIT project. The Specialist will also analyze data and help with interpretation of analysis results, in coordination with astronomy researchers at both a national and international level.

The larger objective is to have successful observations and science analysis of astronomical targets by ASTROSAT/UVIT, which allow scientific studies by Canadian astronomers. Specifically, this position will provide specialized assistance to Canadian astronomers who are users of UVIT and to the UVIT science team.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Meet milestones identified by the Principal Investigators.
  • Provide accurate and reliable technical advice and consultation.
  • Maintain current and timely communication among the UVIT team members.
  • Ensure problems are resolved successfully and in a timely manner.
  • Effectively time manage to prioritize workflow and achieve project deadlines.
  • Perform highly skilled technical work as required to support science results from the UVIT telescope.
  • Demonstrate strong communication, team and client service skills, with an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines.
  • Manage time effectively and ensure manager is kept informed of activities and progress of the work.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Masters degree in Physics or Astrophysics.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience with UVIT data analysis.
  • A minimum of 1 years of experience with UVIT software.
  • Ability to perform detailed design, documentation and implementation of complex technical systems.
  • Ability to interact with team members and review scientific and technical literature.
  • Knowledge of theory and practical application of technical procedures.
  • Open to learning and development, willing to accept new challenges and assignments.
  • Demonstrated communication, organization, problem solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Advanced skills in computer programming, image processing, and FITS file management.
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
