Purpose of the role:
The Tunnel Engineer will contribute to the design and delivery of complex underground works, including transit tunnels, caverns, shafts, and support of excavation systems. The role involves both design and construction-phase support, working closely with project teams to ensure constructability, safety, and technical quality.
This position is ideal for an engineer with 7-10 years of experience who enjoys hands-on problem solving, coordination with contractors, and advancing innovative underground design methods.
Responsibilities and duties:
The principal duties are:
Prepare and review tunnel and underground structure designs, drawings, and calculations.
Lead ground-structure interaction analysis, design reports, and submissions.
Collaborate with geotechnical, structural, and construction teams to ensure practical and safe solutions.
Apply relevant design codes and standards and maintain quality control through peer review.
Support the preparation of proposals, design presentations, and technical reports.
Work to an agreed cost proposal by planning resources and deliverables.
Assess resourcing requirements at each stage of the project.
Attend project progress meetings and report progress versus budget to the Technical Director and client.
Develop detailed methodologies and delegating the preparation of design tasks.
Deliver within times scale, budget constraints and quality expectations.
Qualifications and Experience required:
Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Civil, Structural, or Geotechnical Engineering.
7-10 years of relevant experience in tunnelling or underground design and construction.
Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario or eligible for registration.
Strong technical background in structural/geotechnical engineering.
Experience in numerical analysis, calculation reports and production of design packages.
Self-motivated with the ability to manage priorities and meet deadlines.
Eligible to work in Canada. Candidates without a valid work permit will not be considered.
