Child and Youth Support Worker

Shift Schedule: Temporary - part-time Thursdays, Fridays, & Saturdays

Benchmark: Child & Youth Worker

Grid Level: 11

Wage Rate: $24.97 to $28.62

Department: Transition House Program

Position Summary: Delivers supportive services to families residing at the Transition House, offering parenting guidance to mothers, and implementing child-led activities to support children's emotional well-being.

Reports to: Program Manager or designate.

Job Responsibilities:

Plans and implements child-centered and age-appropriate programming that meet the needs of the children currently residing at the transition house. Communicate plans and related information to coworkers to ensure continuity.



Models appropriate guidance skills when working with the children.



Provides parenting strategies and applicable referrals to clients.



Acts as a positive role model by fostering respectful, supportive, and non-violent interactions with children and youth.



Provides emotional and practical support to children and their mothers; communicates any concerns to the supervisor promptly.



Maintains and organizes inventory of age-appropriate children's equipment, toys, books, art supplies, and play materials.



Plans and coordinates special celebration days and events for children, as appropriate.



Acts as an advocate for children, providing direct support and, when appropriate, collaborating with mothers to access additional resources during the program and when integrated back into the community.



Builds and maintains relationships with relevant community service agencies to stay informed of available resources and strengthen community partnerships.



Maintains accurate and up-to-date records, including client files, communication logs, duty book entries, and staff training documentation.



Maintains working knowledge of systems and resources available to support women and children affected by violence.



Upholds strict confidentiality regarding all clients, children, and staff; uses appropriate, respectful language and behavior at all times when interacting with families.



Performs other related duties as assigned.



Education, Training, and Experience:



A certificate in Early Childhood Care, Child Care Counselling, Child & Youth, or related programs.



Specialized training in violence in the family from a recognized program.



1 year of experience working with women and children who have experienced abuse or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.



A current First Aid Certificate that includes first aid for children and Infant CPR.



A valid class 5 driver's license and reliable vehicle.



Job Skills and Abilities:

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, especially with children.



Ability to organize and prioritize work.



Ability to work with minimum supervision and within a team setting.



Additional Information:

Criminal Record Check required.



This position requires union membership.



This position requires the ability to work in a stressful environment, dealing with children in crisis situations, who have witnessed or experienced physical, sexual, and emotional abuse.
