Summary of Position



Kanawemahwasowin Kamik Inc. is seeking a full-time Training and Development Specialist to lead the development of culturally grounded learning resources, training materials, and educational programming across the organization. This role supports the strengthening and revitalization of Nehiyaw (Cree) knowledge systems, including language, land-based learning, kinship teachings, and Nation wellness teachings. The Specialist will work in respectful relationship with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, cultural staff, Nation education teams, and program leads to ensure that curriculum reflects Cree view, Nation voice, cultural protocol, and seasonal learning cycles. The Training and Development Specialist, identifies learning priorities and provides assistance to design curriculum that is Nation-led, culturally safe, and relevant to Nation wellness. Training and Development Specialist will be responsible for:

Working side-by-side with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and the Leadership Team to ensure all learning initiatives are rooted in Nehiyaw values and kinship-based relationships.

Working collaboratively with the management team and contributes to identifying, developing and implementing culturally guided strategic initiatives, policies, plans, and learning programs necessary for the successful operation of KKI.

Providing relational mentorship, coaching, and support to staff and contractors, including developing work plans and ensuring training is delivered in a culturally respectful manner.

Assisting in planning and participating in gatherings, teachings, Nation engagement sessions, and cultural events, ensuring Elder direction is followed.

Designing curriculum for language, land-based learning, and family wellness that is rooted in Cree teachings like storytelling, seasonal cycles, and kinship-based mentorship.

Serving as a steward of KKI educational resources, ensuring curriculum and materials are developed and handled with care, confidentiality, and deep respect for cultural protocol and lineage.

Ensuring all curriculum development is guided by Cree cultural ethics rather than external institutional models.

Maintaining respectful documentation of teachings and learning materials with Elder consent.

Developing learning frameworks that reflect Cree teachings such as: Storytelling, Seasonal learning, Land-based teaching, Kinship-based mentorship, Experiential, hands on learning.

Ensuring all cultural learning is developed in close partnership with our wellness teams, so that it directly strengthens families and our prevention work.

Promoting a culturally safe and emotionally supportive learning environment, ensuring safety protocols reflect Cree values.

Fostering and maintaining positive, team-based, and relational working relationships within KKI.

Producing regular progress reports and/or adjusts schedules to meet targets and deadlines.

Ensuring curriculum and educational resources align with: Cree cultural protocol, Nation values and teachings, Elder direction and Nation consent.

Representing KKI and its values with integrity in various forums, always upholding the voice and cultural protocols of the ECN Nation.

Supporting respectful protection and safe keeping of cultural knowledge as directed by Elders.

Developing detailed course frameworks that include reviewing learning outcomes and mapping out course activities, assessments and resources;

Designing online and blended courses, and selects and applies the most appropriate instructional design approaches to produce highly relevant, engaging and interactive content.

Researching, selecting, organizing, and creating content, learning activities, and assessments that are Culturally relevant and appropriate for each training program.

Identifying appropriate resources, media and technologies (including social media tools) that will effectively support the achievement of the learning outcomes for each course.

Crafting teaching materials and experiences (in-person, land-based, or blended) that draw from lived experience and Cree worldviews, not just Western theory.

Collaborating with the Programs Director and Managers, to identify the curriculum development requirements, ensuring training material remains up to date and current.

Reflecting evaluation through Nation feedback, relational accountability, and Elder reflection rather than standardized evaluation tools.

Preparing regular reports, analyses, and statistics to support program oversight and strategic planning, ensuring transparent communication that supports well-being and cultural continuity.

Performing duties as assigned by the Director of Human Resources, approaching each task with flexibility and service to Nation needs guided by shared values.

Upholding strict confidentiality and adhering to all privacy laws, KKI policies, and legislative requirements, demonstrating privacy respect and responsible conduct.

Required Qualifications



The successful candidate's minimum requirements are:

Degree in Education, Social Work, Indigenous Studies, Language Revitalization, Human Resources or relevant discipline, or equivalent lived experience, knowledge, and training in relevant field. A combination of training and experience will be considered as well.

Minimum 1 - 3 years of experience in training development, program coordination, or knowledge sharing roles.

Proficiency with technology, Microsoft 365 Suite (Word, Excel, Teams, SharePoint), and data systems

Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and within a team

Demonstrated ability to work respectfully with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Nation members.

Knowledge of or willingness to learn Cree language, kinship systems, and cultural protocols.

Ability to create curriculum that centers Indigenous knowledges and reflects Indigenous teachings.

Commitment to cultural humility, relational accountability, and shared leadership.

Familiarity with various delivery models including online, blended, onsite, peer-to-peer and Nation educational models

Sound knowledge, understanding and familiarity of Indigenous history, Nation dynamics, cultures, traditions, practices, organization, infrastructure and funding

Experience working with First Nation organizations & understands intergenerational violence and trauma in Indigenous Nations

First Aid certification and safety training is an asset.

Valid Class 5 driver's license, willingness to travel within the region, access to a personal vehicle, and satisfactory Criminal Record Check, Driver's Abstract, and Child Intervention Check.
