Job Summary
The Tower Crane Technician/Electrician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical and mechanical systems on tower cranes. This role ensures that all cranes operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory standards. The position requires strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining high safety standards on all job sites.
Key Responsibilities
Installation and Commissioning:
Assemble, wire, and commission new tower cranes according to manufacturer and project specifications. Perform testing and functional verification prior to crane operation.
Electrical Maintenance and Repair:
Diagnose and repair electrical faults in control panels, motors, and safety systems. Replace defective components such as relays, contactors, and limit switches.
Preventive Maintenance:
Conduct scheduled inspections and servicing to prevent breakdowns. Perform lubrication, calibration, and general upkeep of electrical and mechanical systems.
Troubleshooting and Diagnostics:
Use electrical schematics and diagnostic tools (e.g., multimeters, PLC interfaces) to identify and resolve issues efficiently. Analyze electrical and operational faults and recommend long-term corrective actions.
Safety and Compliance:
Adhere to all workplace safety procedures, including lockout/tagout and fall protection requirements. Ensure compliance with CSA, OSHA, and company safety standards.
Testing and Calibration:
Conduct functional and safety tests on hoisting, slewing, and trolley systems. Calibrate load moment indicators, limit switches, and safety cutouts.
Cabling and Power Systems:
Install and maintain power supply cables, junction boxes, and grounding systems. Inspect and service slip rings, festoon systems, and main electrical feeds.
Mechanical and Hydraulic Support:
Assist mechanics with system integration between electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical components. Coordinate repairs that involve both electrical and mechanical disciplines.
Documentation and Reporting:
Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection reports, and service logs. Communicate issues and completed work to supervisors and equipment managers.
Continuous Improvement and Training:
Stay updated on new crane models, electrical systems, and diagnostic technologies. Provide guidance and training to junior technicians or apprentices.
Qualifications and Skills
Certified Industrial or Construction Electrician (Red Seal or equivalent Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering). Manufacturer backed training
Minimum 5 plus years of experience in tower crane and hoists electrical maintenance .
Strong understanding of electrical schematics, control systems, and safety devices.
Proficiency with diagnostic tools and PLC systems.
Ability to work at heights and in various weather conditions.
Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
Valid driver's license; ability to travel to various job sites.
Working Conditions
Field-based role requiring frequent work at heights and outdoors.
Must be able to lift and carry moderate loads (up to 50 lbs).
May involve overtime, weekend, or on-call work depending on project needs.
