Position Summary

Direct Underground is seeking an experienced

Topman / Pipelayer

to work as a key member of a small sewer and watermain reconstruction crew. This role is hands-on and critical to ensuring safe excavation, accurate pipe installation, and efficient daily operations in coordination with the Foreman and equipment operators.

The ideal candidate has strong underground experience, understands grade and line, and takes ownership of quality and safety in the trench.

Key Responsibilities

Underground Construction

Install sewer and watermain pipe to line and grade Set and check grade using laser levels and hand levels Prepare trench bedding, pipe joints, and connections Assist with manhole, catch basin, and service installations Perform backfilling and compaction as required

Trench & Site Safety

Act as the primary trench safety lead under the Foreman Ensure trench boxes, shoring, and access/egress are installed correctly Monitor ground conditions and communicate hazards Maintain safe work practices around live services and locates

Crew Support & Coordination

Communicate effectively with the excavator operator Guide excavation and placement to ensure efficiency and accuracy Assist labourers and support overall crew productivity Step in as acting lead when the Foreman is away

Quality & Productivity

Ensure installations meet municipal standards and specifications Identify issues with materials, grade, or alignment early Maintain a clean, organized, and professional work area

Qualifications & Experience

Required

3-5+ years of experience in sewer and watermain construction Proven experience as a Topman and/or Pipelayer Strong understanding of line, grade, and pipe installation Ability to read drawings, grades, and locate sheets Strong communication and teamwork skills Physically capable of working in underground conditions

Assets

Working at Heights certification Confined Space Awareness Trench Safety certification First Aid / CPR Traffic Control certification
