Casual Correctional Officers provide security, supervision of offenders, and a variety of program and services for offenders within a correctional centre on a rotating shift basis. The major focus of the work is the protection of society and rehabilitation of offenders. Casuals are required to cover shifts when permanent officers are on leave or there is a requirement for additional staffing.
Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Following safety, security and custody procedures involving security checks, offender head counts, searches and supervision of offenders;
  • Supervising the daily routine of offenders;
  • Maintaining control over use and access to security equipment;
  • Providing assistance in the development of case plans for offenders;
  • Working with assigned offenders by providing information and support to assist in the rehabilitation of offenders;
  • Assisting in the development of a release plan for offenders;
  • Assisting with referrals for medical, assessment, and treatment purposes, as required;
  • Completing required documentation on an ongoing basis;
  • Assisting in the delivery of offender programs under the coordination of program personnel;
  • Preparing incident reports as required;
  • Initiating offender discipline as required according to the Correctional Services Act and Regulations and in consultation with correctional personnel;
  • Ensuring policy and procedures are followed on a daily basis; and
  • Other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Applicants must have successful completion of an undergraduate degree, preferably in the social sciences, or completion of a recognized correctional officer, youth worker or a related community college program. Applicants must have relevant on-the-job training or related experience.
  • Strong interpersonal, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
  • The successful applicant must possess current CPR and First Aid Certificates, a valid Class 4 drivers license and have a good driving record.
  • Applicants must have a good previous work and attendance record.
  • Applicants must be available for shift work and week-end work on an on-call basis.
  • Satisfactory references and a satisfactory criminal record check and vulnerable sector check are required.
Other Qualifications:
  • Experience in a position with responsibility for the supervision and guidance of others, preferably in an institutional/residential environment, would be considered an asset.
