Tsilhqot'in Nen (Water, Lands & Resources) Planning Coordinator
to join our team in
Williams Lake, BC.
The successful candidate will join the T?ilhqot'in Nen Team to support the T?ilhqot'in Chiefs and the six T?ilhqot'in communities as they work to achieve lasting reconciliation for the T?ilhqot'in peoples in their engagement with the Governments of British Columbia and Canada.

The T?ilhqot'in Nation is a world leader in advancing Indigenous title and rights, as demonstrated by the landmark Aboriginal Title Declaration from the Supreme Court of Canada in 2014. The Nation is implementing a groundbreaking tripartite framework agreement (Gwets'en Nilt'i Pathway Agreement) with the goal of transforming the fundamental relationship between the T?ilhqot'in Nation and the Federal and Provincial Crown governments. The
Tsilhqot'in Nen Team
is an important participant in the effective transition of lands and resource management and decision-making to the Nation, and to build off the commitments and work identified in the agreements signed with BC and Canada since 2014.
The
T?ilhqot'in Nen Team
goal is to create and Implement strategies to progress the Nation's title and rights under the Gwets'en Nilt'i Pathway Agreement and Nenqay Deni Accord. The Team also supports negotiations with the two levels of government related to management of the T?ilhqot'in Nation's natural resources, lands, waters and fisheries. The T?ilhqot'in Nen Team gathers and manages complex data, completes analyses, develops options and provides nen advice to T?ilhqot'in Leadership. The team facilitates and coordinates projects and engages directly with the six Chiefs and Councils, Community Nen Managers and Coordinators, and with TNG's Stewardship Department. An important component of the work is community engagement to ensure that the negotiations and planning are guided by T?ilhqot'in cultural values and community priorities.
The
Tsilhqot'in Nen Planning Coordinator
will be responsible for managing a multi lateral project involving the coordination of nen planning in the six Tsilhqot'in communities, while addressing some components of the planning at a collective level. They will also assist the Tsilhqot'in Nation in a broader effort to secure recognition and respect for its title, rights and jurisdiction. The successful candidate will bring a combination of communications and technical education/experience in lands and natural resource management combined with cultural awareness and sensitivity.
This is a mid-level position and reports to the Nen Manager.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the Nation-level Nen Planning.
Support and coordinate six (6) community-level Nen use plans and Nation-level Nen use plan into (a) cohesive, manageable and implementable Nen plan(s).
Develop and implement strategic plans, work plans and projects.
Collaborate with and support other TNG managers on projects that intersect with nen planning, e.g., to plan and implement new nen laws, policies and regulations reflective of traditional governance, and to guide culturally appropriate economic uses of lands and resources.
Collaborate with the TNG Stewardship Department as it manages lands and resource issues.
Effectively engage, and report on the Nen Planning activities and progress to Tsilhqot'in Nation members and leaders from the six communities.
Work with (6) community Nen Managers or Nen Coordinators as they undertake nen use planning.
Design education and training plans for the six (6) community Nen Managers to build community capacity for nen management and governance.
Manage and direct contractors, professionals, and experts retained to support the nen planning work.
Develop budgets.
Effectively engage and strengthen relationships with our partners to bring about the changes required in provincial and federal legislation and policy to achieve Tsilhqot'in goals and objectives
Other duties as required
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in planning-, science-, forestry-, mining- or lands-related fields, e.g. Natural Resource Management, Land Use Planning, Geography, Environmental Sciences, Biology,
or the right combination of experience and education
Strategic thinker and "doer" with ability to develop and implement strategies and plans based on input from Tsilhqot'in leadership, community members, and diverse range of input (e.g. cultural values, science, economics)
Demonstrated project- and personnel-management experience. Mentorship experience an asset.
Excellent communication skills including competent public speaking, professional writing and report preparation
Strong initiative, excellent professional judgement and commitment to success
Excellent research, analysis and problem-solving skills
Complete working knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint
ArcGIS software skills/experience an asset but not a requirement
Proven record of successful working relationships with/for First Nations a strong asset, as well as successful experience working with other governments
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Valid BC Driver's License, ability and willingness to travel to remote communities and travel to meetings outside of the region as required
Flexible work schedule to partake in evening engagement sessions and Nation/community events.
