Thrift store operation dedicated to assisting the needy
We are looking for someone with additional experience in the field of assisting the needy and vulnerable in our downtown core. Experience in the social assistance sector is an asset. Prior work in the retail sector is mandatory.
The Thrift Store Clerk performs a wide variety of duties under the direction of the Manager to ensure an effective, safe and profitable operation of the store that is consistent with the St Vincent de Paul mission and values in caring for and helping the needy of Prince George.
Duties and Responsibilities
Build customer and donor relationships by providing prompt and exceptional service following the St Vincent mission statement of service and charity to all, treating everyone with respect, dignity and kindness and ensuring confidentiality is maintained.
Help respond to donor & customer concerns, forward unresolved issues to the Store Manager as appropriate.
Help sort, clean and price donated articles.
Help with sale of items; arrangement of sale rooms & store displays.
Assist with the voucher program providing clothing and goods to the needy with compassion and dignity.
Knowledgeable of the services offered by St Vincent de Paul in Prince George and be able to refer clients/donors as appropriate.
Help schedule donation pick-ups by St. Vincent de Paul driver.
Operate the cash register/debit machine and as needed help prepare the daily deposits and bank the deposits at the end of the day.
Assist the Manager in the overall cleanliness and safety of the store and surrounding property, with emphasis on any provincial health and covid guidelines, as they apply from time to time.
Assist in training volunteers for all areas of the store, ensuring their time and talents are utilized, resulting in a rewarding experience.
Qualifications
Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent
Retail experience a must
A completed Criminal Record Check by the RCMP, that would not put clients, staff or finances at risk
Ability to work as part of a team and build relationships
Ability to work independently and take initiative.
Ability to assess situations and be able to jump into different job roles from accepting and picking up donations, to process and pricing donations, merchandising, selling items, operating cash register, providing good customer service.
Working conditions
Able to work with variety of customers - some whom may have addictions or mental illness. Able to work shifts Monday to Friday, but some Saturdays will be required. Work will generally be completed in a public space.
Physical requirements
Able to lift minimum of 10 to 40 pounds on a repeated basis. Able to assemble and move racks, clothing and sales items. Will require climbing ladders, considerable standing, bending, kneeling and reaching in awkward positions.
