Job Title: Theatre Technician Production

Job Summary: The Theatre Production Technician is responsible for managing and coordinating the scheduling, production, and technical preparations of Studio 58 productions. The Theatre Production Technician performs administrative and budgetary responsibilities relating to stage production and provides supervision to student production crew and SWAP students. This position is also responsible for coordinating the backstage, including strike of each production run, and maintenance of props, costumes, and furniture. Working in a collaborative environment, the Theatre Technician consults with other Studio 58 contributors to jointly ensure the smooth and successful run of Studio 58 productions. Position may perform other duties as required.

Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Responsible for managing the scheduling, production and technical preparations of Studio 58 productions:
Scheduling and Production Coordination

• Plans and oversees production schedules and deadlines in consultation with the Theatre Arts Artistic Director, guest directors and designers.
• Coordinates and schedules rehearsal times.
• With the Theatre Arts Artistic Director and Technical Director, establishes production deadlines and monitors the achievement of these deadlines.
• Monitors the production aspects of each production event such as maintaining quality control, coaching student stage managers as to appropriate protocol, and responding to concerns highlighted in show reports; including but not limited to safety concerns.
• Organizes and chairs production meetings.
• Organizes access to Theatre Arts facilities such as liaising with Security and Building Services Manager, distributing and monitoring keys, etc.
• Acts as the liaison between the director, designers, technical directors, coordinators, Studio 58, student stage managers and crew.

Technical Requirements

• Gives basic sound instruction to students.
• Obtains and/or orders supplies and materials required for production.
• Coordinates videotaping of the shows.
• Facilitates student use of props and costumes.
• Facilitates student projects and performance labs.

2. Provides supervision and direction to student production members:

• Assigns crew work to students.
• Supervises crew heads and backstage organization.
• Supervises Work Study (SWAP) students.
• Provides input at mid-term and end of term, to Theatre Arts student evaluation meetings.
• Provides direction to stage and production management students through weekly labs and support throughout the rehearsal process.

3. Performs administrative and budgetary duties relating to stage production:

• Supervises production budgets as set by the Theatre Arts Artistic Director.
• In conjunction with the Theatre Technical Director, estimates costing for the technical needs of the show including materials for costumes, set, lights, sound, equipment rentals, and special effect needs.
• Drafts up letters of agreements for guest designers, directors, assistants and any hired employee related to productions using under the supervision of the Theatre Arts Artistic Director.
• Coordinates necessary paperwork for payment of employees related to productions.
• Facilitates the needs of employees related to productions (i.e. parking passes, campus and workshop orientation, etc.)
• Balances, distributes and accounts for substantial petty cash float.

4. Assists with the coordination of backstage and maintenance responsibilities:

• Coordinates the strike of each production and oversees the return of borrowed or rented items.
• Provides stage management of shows when a qualified student is not available.
• Maintains and organizes backstage areas including rooms A060, A063, costume and props areas.
• Loans out props, set and furniture items and costumes to other theatre companies including maintaining appropriate records.
• Supervises weekly cleanup of all Theatre Arts spaces.

5. Performs other duties/projects as required.

• Researches the pricing of capital items and equipment for the Department in consultation with other Theatre Arts staff, faculty, and other College departments.

Qualifications Required:
Education and Experience:

• Three (3) year diploma in Theatre Arts OR a two year professional program in Theatre or Liberal Arts combined with 1 year of post-secondary studies.
• Four (4) years of recent experience as a production manager and/or stage manager in a professional theatre setting.
• OR an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• Experience with supervision and coordination of production crew, including volunteer members.
• Experience with managing a production budget.
• Knowledge in the following areas: audio-visual equipment, theatre maintenance procedures, backstage coordination, wardrobe, etc.
• Knowledge and experience of Health & Safety operations and requirements, including WHMIS safety standards and practices.

Skills & Abilities

• A demonstrated proficiency in English and the ability to effectively communicate tactfully, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to communicate and deal effectively with others, providing clear and accurate information.
• Ability to work independently and as a team member.
• Organizational skills, leadership skills and the ability to meet deadlines are essential.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, students, theatre professionals and the general public.
• Effective supervisory skills. Ability to supervise students and provide feedback in an efficient and constructive manner
• Ability to develop and manage budget requirements.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure to meet strict deadlines and in high-pressure situations.
• Ability to be flexible and work in a variety of working conditions, work schedules, and arrangements.
• Proficiency in computer skills including word processing, maintaining spreadsheets, and Microsoft Office 365.
• Ability to travel to other locations, as required.
• Basic ability to operate power tools.

Working Conditions
Ability to move around costumes, props, and other stage materials exceeding 10 kg.
Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and scaffolding, and use heavy equipment when necessary.
Exposure to conditions of dust, dirt, fumes, noise, noxious odours frequently present during construction of stage set, props and costumes.
Ability to work a flexible schedule and long hours during peak periods leading up to theatre performances.
