Duties

Student Heritage/Park Communicators deliver on-site or off-site programs for specific audience needs using a variety of new and innovative approaches. They greet and orient visitors, respond to questions and provide information about Terra Nova National Park, other sites in the Field Unit, Parks Canada, and the surrounding areas.

Work environment

Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and presentation of Canada\'s outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to hire Student Heritage/Park Communicators for the summer of 2023.

Students are not required to have previous work experience in order to apply for these opportunities.

Education:
  • Registered as a full time or part-time secondary or post secondary student in an accredited academic program or participating in adult education and retraining programs at the secondary level, operated under the authority of an accredited academic institution.
Degree equivalency

The following will be applied / assessed at a later date (essential for the job)

English or French Information on language requirements
Knowledge:
  • K1- Knowledge of Parks Canada, it\xe2\x80\x99s programs and/or services

Abilities:
  • A1 - Ability to communicate clearly and provide information to the general public, supervisors and fellow employees

Personal Suitability:
  • PS1 - Exercises Sound Judgment
  • PS2 - Demonstrates initiative

Asset Experience:
  • AE1 - Experience in theatre, performing arts and/or playing musical instruments.

Asset Abilities:
  • A1 - Ability to deliver presentations using effective communication techniques

Operational Requirements:
  • Candidates must be willing to wear the Parks Canada uniform and/or costume.
  • Candidates must be willing to work a variable schedule, including evenings, weekends and statutory holidays.
  • Candidates must be willing to work outdoors and be exposed to various weather conditions while performing work requiring moderate physical effort (i.e. hiking/guided tours in natural environments).
  • Candidates are responsible for their own transportation to/from the work location \xe2\x80\x93 transportation is not provided.
  • Student housing is limited in Terra Nova National Park and may not be available for all candidates interested in that work location.

Reliability Status security clearance
  • To be considered for employment under one of the student employment programs, the individual must be registered as a full-time or part-time secondary or post-secondary student in an accredited academic program OR participating in adult education and retraining programs at the secondary level, operated under the authority of an accredited academic institution
  • Candidate must be the minimum age to work in Newfoundland and Labrador (16)
  • Successful candidate may be required to possess and maintain a valid class 5 driver\xe2\x80\x99s licence, if applicable to the position.
