Job Summary:
Van-Kam Freightways Ltd. is looking for a highly skilled Terminal Manager to join our team out of our Campbell River terminal. As the Terminal Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the operations and overall management of our terminal. You will play a key role in ensuring the efficient and effective movement of freight while maintaining exceptional customer service, meeting operational goals, and maintaining a positive working environment and culture. This position will report directly to the Regional Manager \xe2\x80\x93 Vancouver Island, who reports up to the Director of Operations.About Us:Van-Kam Freightways Ltd. (Van Kam) is one of the largest regional carriers in Western Canada specializing in less-than-truckload (LTL) transportation. With 8 terminal locations across British Columbia, we fulfill shipments to communities within 1-3 days throughout BC and Alberta. Between our own resources and our partner network, our coverage extends beyond Western Canada into the U.S. and Eastern Canada.Responsibilities:Operations Management:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the terminal, ensuring adherence to company policies and procedures.
  • Oversee and manage the Agency relationship with our Port Hardy agent to ensure efficient flow of freight to meet customer requirements north of Campbell River.
  • Manage terminal activities, including dock operations, load planning, dispatching, and driver scheduling, to optimize productivity and minimize delays.
  • Monitor and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) to identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions as necessary.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure seamless coordination of operations and timely resolution of any issues or challenges.
  • Daily review of trailer banks, terminal depart time, driver\xe2\x80\x99s log, employee hours and overtime, trailer close time, trailer depart times, trailer weights/load factors, and investigating and correcting manifesting issues.
  • Daily review of undelivered freight, unmanifested freight, adjusted pick-up reports.
  • Participate in weekly meetings with Management.
  • Filling in for holiday coverage in different departments when needed.
  • Oversee equipment, building and yard maintenance.
  • Weights and Measures revenue
  • Managing employee absentee and coach/discipline when needed.
Customer Service:
  • Maintain a strong focus on customer satisfaction and ensure that customer needs are met promptly and effectively.
  • Address customer inquiries, concerns, and complaints in a professional and timely manner.
  • Collaborate with the sales team to identify opportunities for business growth and development.
Safety and Compliance:
  • Enforce compliance with all safety regulations, company policies, and applicable laws.
  • Promote a safe working environment.
  • Work with Maintenance department to manage outside vendors who maintain and repair Van Kam equipment.
  • Work with Safety department to ensure all Safety policies and procedures are adhered to and in place.
  • Managing employee driving habits and coach/discipline when needed.
Financial Management:
  • Manage terminal budget and expenses, seeking opportunities for cost reduction and efficiency improvement.
Investing in the development of employees
  • Support or help develop employees by coaching, mentoring, and leading
  • Institute solid onboarding process for new employees ensuring they are set up for successful transition into the Van Kam family.
Ad-Hoc
  • Other Terminal Specific duties as required
  • Other duties/projects on a as needed basis
Required Qualifications:Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and develop a high-performing team.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and compliance requirements in the transportation industry.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and handle occasional travel requirements.
  • Bachelor\'s degree in Business Administration, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or equivalent experience is preferred.
  • 5 years of management experience required. Those with experience managing a union environment will be given preference.
  • Transportation experience is an asset.
  • AS400 experience is an asset.
  • Experience with transportation technology is preferred.
