Technician

Primary Purpose: To provide support in the planning, delivery, and administration of laboratory techniques courses within Biomedical Sciences (BMSC).

Nature of Work: Reporting to the BMSC Laboratory Coordinator, this position is responsible for the delivery of the laboratory portion of undergraduate courses in BMSC. This includes the preparation of reagents and materials for students in each lab session, supervision of students and teaching assistants, and maintenance of equipment and supplies in the laboratory. Judgment and decision making largely follow established procedures and guidelines. Because these courses are offered September to April, there will be limited opportunity for holidays during those months.

Typical Duties or Accountabilities: Prepare reagents and materials daily for the undergraduate BMSC labs in a timely manner; ensure necessary reagents and equipment are ordered and available for all experiments for successful completion of scheduled labs; set-up, test, use, and maintain equipment for the undergraduate labs; assist with safety education and other technical duties required to deliver the laboratory sections of programs; guide undergraduate students through the execution, interpretation, and writeup of lab assignments.

Education: A bachelor\'s degree in a health sciences discipline (e.g., biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, microbiology, immunology).

Experience: Minimum five years of experience in a laboratory setting. Applicants should have hands on experience with a wide range of biochemical, molecular biological, and bacterial techniques. This includes, but is not limited to, microscopy, bacterial cell culture, chromatography, electrophoresis, enzyme kinetics, PCR, and mammalian tissue culture.

Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal; effective organizational and time management skills; ability to work on multiple projects and competing demands to meet deadlines; and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
