We are looking for a Technical Officer to support the Ocean, Coastal and River Engineering Research Centre. The selected candidate would be someone who shares our core values Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

At the Ocean, Coastal and River Engineering Centre, the researchers are using physical modelling techniques to find real world solutions to ongoing challenges present in the natural world. The primary purpose of the position is to provide technical support services in the design, construction, conduct and analysis of various physical model experiments. The incumbent should be able to deploy construction/fabrication skills and techniques to complete the experimental setup. Upon completion of the experimental setup the employee records test data, interprets results and compiles and performs initial analysis. The employee may be asked to coordinate or assist with the production of technical reports, manuscripts, presentations and/or client reports by preparing figures and data in chart and statistical formats. The incumbent will also be involved in the regular maintenance and upgrade of OCRE's testing facilities. This position is very physical and regular tasks include shovelling, raking and heavy lifting of objects.

Education

Completion of post-secondary education in a technical, engineering or scientific discipline related to the position.

An equivalent combination of work related experience, training and education may be considered.

Experience
  • Experience in preparing a work site such as setting-up apparatus and equipment in accordance with instructions or established procedures, assisting more senior technical officers.
  • Experience in selecting materials, maintaining basic tools for experiments at work sites, which may include recommending action to address non-serviceable items, maintaining technical logs, records and inventories.
  • Experience in respecting and promoting established health and safety guidelines, processes and procedures which may include the identification and recording of potential health and safety risks in relation to functions performed, and report health and safety issues (need for improvement, infractions, etc.).
  • Experience using fabrication/construction skills to plan and build physical models.
  • Experience working with CAD software considered an asset.
  • Experience operating machinery such as skid steers and/or forklift would be an asset.

Compensation

From $49,298 to $69,364 per annum.

Notes
  • Requires daily intermittent periods of standing, walking and sitting at a work bench; working in awkward positions; bending and stretching; moving lightweight objects and large, awkward and heavier objects on occasion; operating hand and power tools; climbing stairs and ladders on occasion.
  • Work is typically performed in a laboratory, plant or shop environment that includes daily exposure to background noise from tools and equipment, and regular exposure to chemicals, dirt, noise, noxious odors, hazardous equipment and substances, extreme temperatures or other awkward conditions. Work can be performed indoors and outdoors, extreme weather conditions, and working on uneven terrain and from heights.
  • Heavy lifting of objects up to 45kg.
  • A pre-qualified list may be established for similar positions for a one year period.
