Role Overview
The Tax Professional prepares moderate-complexity personal tax returns and supports senior staff with more advanced filings. This role requires a solid understanding of Canadian tax rules, experience handling a variety of tax situations, and the ability to work independently while also contributing to the team.
The Tax Professional serves as the bridge between entry-level preparers and senior technical staff.
Key Responsibilities
1. Moderate-Complexity Tax Preparation
Prepare a wide range of
T1 personal tax returns
, including:
Employment income
Tuition, RRSP, and pension income
Investment income (T5, capital gains)
Rental property income (basic to intermediate)
Self-employment income (sole proprietors)
Identify applicable deductions, credits, and tax optimization opportunities.
Ensure accurate and complete documentation for each client file.
2. Support With More Complex Tax Cases
Assist senior staff by preparing portions of complex files.
Compile financial information needed for advanced schedules.
Participate in multi-year and adjustment filings.
Research tax questions and assist with issues that arise in special cases.
3. Client Interaction
Conduct client interviews to gather necessary tax information.
Ask clarifying questions to ensure correct reporting.
Explain tax outcomes in clear, professional language.
Maintain a strong client service focus during peak season.
4. Quality & Compliance
Follow established workflows and documentation standards.
Review basic returns completed by Tax Associates and provide guidance when needed.
Flag errors, issues, or missing information and correct them promptly.
Ensure compliance with CRA requirements and filing procedures.
5. Software & Workflow Proficiency
Use tax software effectively (TaxCycle, ProFile, or similar).
Maintain accurate digital file documentation.
Assist junior staff with software-related questions.
Use internal tools for checklists, file notes, and e-filing.
Qualifications & ExperienceRequired
2-4 years
of personal tax preparation experience.
Strong understanding of Canadian T1 tax rules.
Experience preparing:
Self-employed returns (basic)
Rental income schedules
Investment income
Multi-year or catch-up filings
Proficiency with tax software platforms.
Good communication and client service skills.
Ability to work independently and handle volume during tax season.
Preferred
Experience in a tax preparation or public accounting environment.
Familiarity with bookkeeping software such as QuickBooks or Xero.
Experience assisting with CRA information requests.

Contract length: 4 months
Pay: $22.00-$25.00 per hour
