Xplore is looking for a Systems Designer based in our Markham office location. The Systems Designer will be responsible for the design and configuration of Xplore\'s systems network. This role requires a deep understanding of authentication, compute, storage, networking, and orchestration/automation concepts in both bare metal and highly virtualized environments. Leveraging a systematic, engineering-based approach, this individual will show strong tendencies towards properly quantifying technical assumptions and will look to validate solutions properly before recommending production changes.

This position reports to the Sr. Manager, Core Network Engineering in Calgary.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Ensure the technical and engineering integrity and security of Xplore\'s systems network and interfaces. This includes, but is not limited to, establishing and maintaining Standard Best Practices, documentation, and equipment configurations.
  • Implement, configure, monitor, secure and maintain the server environment and infrastructure consisting of physical and virtual servers in multiple datacenters
  • Responsible for testing, configuring, implementing, securing, troubleshooting, and maintaining server related software including authentication, backup, systems management, and supporting infrastructure (configuration management & automation, etc.)
  • Plan and co-ordinate server and application expansions and upgrades, deployments and conversions, with a focus on solutions that allow for automation and ease of administration
  • Perform regular system health, capacity and security audits of compute environment and formulate and execute plans based on findings
  • Deploying and maintaining back-end infrastructure such as firewalls, blade servers, NAS, SAN
  • Ensuring all systems and services are monitored and backed-up
  • Work closely with the Principal Systems Designer and vendor to deliver new technology solutions and/or validating proof of concept.
  • Define technical solutions to internal teams for design review and implementation. Create Engineering Work Order documentation for Network Operations to implement.
  • Document all changes, conversions, upgrades, expansions, and deployments
  • Support the Network Operations team in resolving any systems issues when escalated (on-call required)
The ideal candidate will possess:
  • Completion of a post-secondary degree/diploma in a related field (i.e. Engineering, Computer Science)
  • 5-7 years related work experience with systems design and administration (minimum of 5 years Linux experience mandatory)
  • Hands-on experience in servers (VMware, ESX setup, administration and troubleshooting), Microsoft/Linux/Unix applications, network protocol, internetworking, and configuration
  • Strong knowledge of Firewalls, Load Balancers, DNS, and Security (e.g. IPS, ISE, etc.) products.
  • Advanced knowledge (including maintenance & troubleshooting) of Linux based systems
  • Advanced knowledge of Internet Protocols (i.e. SMTP, NTP, SNMP, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience in medium to large environment systems administration
  • Solid experience in database design
  • Knowledge of backup methodologies
  • Knowledge and experience in one or more programming languages and scripting (i.e. SOAP, Perl, Bash, PHP, Java, etc.) would be an asset
  • Good knowledge of Network Routing and Switching Protocols (i.e. BGP, OSPF, TCP/IP, etc.)
  • Excellent communication skills; both verbal and written
