The MCAF

Settlement Workers in Schools

(SWIS) offer settlement services to newcomer students and their families in the Fredericton and surrounding area who choose English schools or French immersion schools. In partnership with local schools, the Anglophone School District and community partners, SWIS workers support students to learn about and to integrate into their new school and community.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:



Conduct needs assessments with students and their families Provide crisis counseling and referrals for newcomer families, as needed Liaise with schools to gain understanding of their respective programs, share best practices and provide support as requested Provide newcomer students and families with information and orientation to community programs and services Apply case management approach to support clients Drive newcomer children and youth using company vehicle Complete monthly and quarterly reports in accordance with deadlines Provide referrals, service linking and accompaniment to community programs and resources including support filling out documentation for services Work with a team to plan and facilitate orientations, workshops, training sessions and events for newcomer students and families Participate in youth recreational activities Work collaboratively with MCAF staff, teachers, school administration Increase school, and public, awareness of diversity& Inclusion through presentations, meetings and community involvement

Requirements:



University degree or years equivalent of experience 1-year recent related experience or equivalent combination of education, training Excellent writing, speaking, and listening English language skills Fluency in other languages (e.g. Arabic, Tigrigna, Pashtu, Dari, Swahili, Somali*) will be an asset
Driver's licence (class 5) and clean driver abstract Unique and innovative strategies to engage, motivate and inspire youth Excellent active listening skills Proven ability to take initiative, be creative and autonomous Expertise in facilitating group sessions & delivering presentations Effective multitasking, priority setting and time management skills Experience in outreach, community development and marketing of program and services Familiarity with issues facing newcomers in Canada and systemic barrier facing integration in education, social, cultural, and economic aspects of Canadian life Highly proficient with technologies including MS Office Applications, Google Drive and Google Docs

Terms of employment:



Contract - renewable pending continuation of funding and satisfactory job performance Up to 40 hours per week; Benefits Criminal Record Check Clearance with Vulnerable Sector Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed
