Reporting to the Manager, Facility Operations and Energy, the Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for leading the planning, implementation, and ongoing performance management of CHEO's sustainability efforts. This role ensures that hospital operations, capital planning, and engagement activities are aligned with CHEO's environmental objectives, including carbon reduction, resource efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
As a key advisor and program lead, the Sustainability Coordinator designs and manages cross-functional initiatives in carbon, energy, waste, water, procurement, transportation, and behavior change. The role supports sustainability reporting, grant applications, compliance documentation, and external recognition. The coordinator also leads events and campaigns that foster environmental awareness among staff, patients, and the broader community.
This is a full-time, on-site position based in Ottawa.
POSITION SUMMARY
Sustainability Strategy & Program Leadership:
Lead the design and delivery of CHEO's sustainability programs (Green Team).
Align sustainability initiatives with organizational goals.
Drive continuous improvement in carbon, energy, waste, water, procurement, transportation, and climate resilience.
Manage projects from inception to completion, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, and coordinating with internal teams and vendors.
Define, track, and present key sustainability metrics aligned with industry framework (e.g., GRI, GHS, LEED, BOMA best) and governing bodies (ECCC, CSA, CaGBC)
Prepare reports and dashboards for internal leadership, funders, and regulators (e.g., CHEO Foundation, Accreditation Canada, CCGHC).
Monitor and report Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions to support carbon reduction planning, climate adaptation, and regulatory compliance.
Maintain documentation for compliance, funding, and certifications.
Staff, Community & Stakeholder Engagement:
Plan and execute campaigns and events (e.g., Earth Day, Kick the Carbon Contest) to raise awareness and participation.
Develop educational resources, workshops, volunteer initiatives (e.g., tree planting or clean-up drives), and training sessions.
Partner with patient, staff, and community organizations to promote shared environmental values.
Leverage social media, newsletters, annual reports, and a hospital-wide platform for communication.
Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management:
Ensure compliance with environmental regulations (e.g., Ontario Regulation 507/18).
Maintain records for audits, inspections, and environmental certifications.
Identify environmental risks, recommend mitigations, and maintain CHEO's sustainability roadmap.
Funding, Recognition & Innovation:
Research and apply for grants, sponsorships, and sustainability awards.
Support annual budget management for sustainability projects.
Monitor healthcare sustainability trends and recommend innovative practices.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Integration:
Collaborate with Facilities, Procurement, Food Services, and Clinical teams to embed sustainability into daily operations.
Support internal working groups, including the Green Team.
Facilitate best practice sharing across departments and develop case studies.
QUALIFICATIONS
Level 1 Criminal Record Check and remain compliant (Essential)
Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Engineering, Business, or a related field. (Essential)
Minimum five (5+) years of experience in sustainability, environment engagement, project management, or a related role in a complex organization.(Essential)
Certifications such as LEED Green Associate, Certified Energy Manager (CEM), project management, or environmental auditing. (Preferred)
Proficiency in sustainability tracking tools, metrics (e.g., GHG emissions, waste audits), and Microsoft Office (Essential).
Strong project management and multitasking skills (Essential)
Skilled in grant writing, budgeting, and stakeholder reporting. (Essential)
Experience with climate mitigation, environmental compliance, or healthcare operations (Preferred)
Creativity in planning events, developing campaigns, and social engagement. (Essential)
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. (Essential)
Excellent interpersonal skills with a strong ability to engage and inspire others. (Essential)

Effective March 29, 2021, CHEO will conduct a more comprehensive pre-screening and evaluation process.
