Type of Position: Full-Time (1 Year Contract)

The Opportunity

Join the Canada Impact Team as a Sustainability Consultant and contribute to McDonald\'s external environmental commitments. Within the Impact Team, you will get the chance to collaborate with a diverse team of experts, including communicators, government and public affairs professionals, and sustainability leaders. You will work cross-functionally with supply chain, operations, field service, and franchisees to drive circularity and waste reduction initiatives in McDonald\'s Canada restaurants. It will involve playing a vital role in integrating purpose into everyday business operations and advancing our position as an industry leader in sustainability. You should be able to embrace a learning mindset and seize opportunities for personal and professional growth within our organization.

Principal Accountabilities:

The person in this role will have the following major responsibilities:

Data Collection, Planning & Outlining Opportunities

  • Collect and analyze data from field sales, restaurants, and corporate outlets for recycling and waste diversion assessments.
  • Ensure accurate tracking and reporting while identifying areas for improvement.
  • Support the development of packaging, waste, and circularity reporting and metrics in partnership with the Impact and supply chain teams.
  • Analyze waste data and identify opportunities for waste reduction, cost savings, and environmental impact mitigation.
  • Research and recommend innovative waste management technologies, practices, and vendors.
Project Execution
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate sustainability principles into packaging, procurement, and operational processes to minimize waste generation.
  • Implement waste reduction strategies and promote recycling and composting programs in collaboration with restaurant teams and external partners.
  • Work with operations, field teams, franchisees and suppliers to implement projects in restaurants.
  • Drive partnerships and initiatives with external stakeholders such as waste management agencies, suppliers, and community organizations to advance waste reduction and recycling efforts.
  • Provide guidance and training to restaurant staff on waste management practices, ensuring compliance with regulations and best practices.
  • Identify new partnerships, opportunities, and technologies for scaling waste pilots in relevant municipalities.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and qualifications:
  • Bachelor\'s degree in a related discipline.
  • 3-5 years of experience as a sustainability professional in waste management and circularity roles within the service industry or large corporations.
  • Knowledge of key environmental and social sustainability topics, including net-zero strategies, waste management, emerging ESG requirements, and legislation.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to analyze and interpret data.
  • Demonstrated experience or understanding of the solid waste management sector.
  • Previous involvement in fast-paced, multi-functional matrix organizations.
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills to effectively engage with management, staff, and external partners.
  • Strong critical thinking abilities and the ability to escalate issues promptly when assistance is required.
  • A catalyst for initiating improvements in the business and driving the right behaviors to meet department and corporate objectives.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for developing and maintaining effective working relationships with all levels of the organization.
  • Passion for learning, with a focus on continuous improvement and growth within our organization.
  • Ability to multi-task and effectively balance conflicting priorities.
