Supportive Roommate - Roles & Responsibilities
As a Supportive Roommate with Resourceful Futures Community Support Ltd., you will play a vital role in providing support to adults with developmental disabilities in a shared living environment. This position is structured under a monthly fee-for-service contract and involves the following key responsibilities:
Provide a Safe and Supportive Home: Offer a caring and inclusive living space where individuals can thrive and feel secure.
Promote Independence: Encourage and assist individuals in developing life skills and pursuing personal goals.
Foster Community Inclusion: Support participation in community activities, events, and relationships that align with the individual's interests.
Collaborate with Support Networks: Work closely with families, professionals, and other stakeholders to ensure holistic care.
Respectful Boundaries: Typically, care is not required between 9 AM and 3 PM on weekdays, unless the individual is not attending day programs.
Maintain Ethical Standards: Uphold RFCSL's mission, values, and code of ethics in all aspects of service delivery.
Required Qualifications and Training
Community Disability Practitioner or equivalent qualification
Experience supporting complex needs
Emergency First Aid & CPR/AED certified
Non-Violent Crisis Prevention Intervention trained
Positive Behavior Supports Level 1
Medication Administration trained
Current criminal record check (vulnerable sector)
Valid class 5 driver's license, reliable vehicle, $2M liability insurance
Home and Commercial Liability insurance
Intermediate computer skills
Criminal record check with vulnerable sector.
The ideal candidate will:
Support Daily Living: Assist individuals with home and personal care activities in a respectful, empowering manner.
Promote Wellness and Safety: Ensure the health, safety, and overall well-being of individuals always.
Foster Inclusion and Companionship: Provide meaningful companionship and encourage active participation in community life.
Implement Individual Service Plans (ISP): Carry out personalized goals and activities as outlined in individual's ISP.
Collaborate with Support Teams: flexibility and a willingness to attend meetings and training sessions, even outside their immediate service area. Communicates effectively by sharing timely updates, insights, and concerns related to the individual's care and support.
Maintain Documentation: Keeping accurate records of activities, medical apt, AT & EI, Personal finances, goal updates and progress.
Support Appointments and Outings: Accompany individuals to appointments and community engagements as needed.
Provide Specialized Support: Bring experience and understanding to support individuals with complex needs.
This role is ideal for someone with a background in community disability services, who is passionate about creating inclusive, supportive home environments.
The specific requirements for the support home for this individual include the following
The support home must be committed to fostering a close and collaborative relationship with the individual's family.
The support home must not have children or other supported individuals.
Availability is required from 3:00 PM to 9:00 AM, the individual attends a day program between the hours 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM.
The support home staff must be trained and prepared to assist with behavioral de-escalation and crisis management. The individual exhibits frequent behavioral concerns that may escalate to aggression toward self or others, as well as property destruction.
Individuals' needs or requirements
Requires continuous, 24-hour supervision and support to ensure safety, well-being, and consistent care.
Requires comprehensive assistance with medication management, including administration, monitoring, and documentation.
Requires comprehensive Assistance with bilateral tonic-clonic seizure management and TMJ syndrome (jaw dislocations).
Requires full assistance with personal care needs hygiene, toileting, grooming, and dressing due to incontinence and inability to toilet independently. A structured bowel routine with physical stimulation is needed to manage frequent constipation
Requires assistance with all activities of daily living, including meal preparation, and household tasks.
Requires assistance with all transportation arrangements to ensure timely and safe access to appointments, community activities, and other essential destinations
Requires support in Participating in meaningful community activities that promote social inclusion, personal growth, and connection with others.
