Job Description

Nanaimo Youth Services Association is a non-profit organization which has delivered services to young adults in Nanaimo for more than 56 years. Over this period, NYSA has offered a number of services to our youth population, including housing, employment readiness and life skills training and support. As well, the agency provides a supportive living team dealing primarily with youth either in-or-recently aged-out of provincial care. NYSA provides a comprehensive benefits package and an optional retirement savings contributions program.

Job Summary



As a Supportive Living Worker, you will ensure the well-being of clients in the program and promote their development toward adulthood. A key component of this job is assisting clients in their physical, social, emotional and daily living skills to increase their independence and allow them to become self-sufficient in the community.

Responsibilities



Establish rapport and build positive relationships with at-risk youth, including youth with varying levels of mental wellness, substance use concerns, challenging behavior, and complex health and social needs.

Assess the needs of youth clients, and support them in developing a plan to prioritize needs. Assess changing needs and monitor ongoing progress toward goals. Work one-on-one with clients and their professional and informal supports to help achieve their goals and make positive changes.

Make referrals to outside programs and agencies as required. Liaise with MCFD for youth agreement negotiations and routine day to day services. Network with external agencies around academic goals, mental health, counselling, probation, housing, addictions and general wellness.

Connect with multi-barrier youth, providing emotional and practical support services for youth with complex social and health care needs and/or behavioural problems; provide crisis intervention and stress management services when required.

Provide ongoing advocacy and education, empowering youth to address and recognize individual barriers to moving toward independence, within a program that recognizes individual progress and success.

Provide emotional and practical support to assist youth in meeting their needs, including food, security, support, hygiene, harm reduction supplies, housing, life skills information and programs, social opportunities, advocacy and outreach/accompaniment.

Provide youth with transition support when exiting the program.

Work collaboratively with housing staff to ensure programming goals are being met.

Perform administrative tasks, including intake, assessment and other evaluation tools, collecting statistics and process reporting.

Work collaboratively with staff in other areas of the agency's operations, as part of a multi-disciplinary team, including support to volunteers and practicum students.

Cooperatively provide one-on-one or group-based life skills workshops to youth.

Assist with the day-to-day support needs in the youth housing building.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications



Post-secondary education in a related field.

Cultural competency and sensitivity; experience working with youth from a variety of backgrounds.

Demonstrated knowledge of the barriers faced by youth.

Must be proficient with Microsoft 365 and Teams and have knowledge of general office routines.

Demonstrated group facilitation skills.

Ability to create and write clear and concise reports.

Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check

A valid BC driver's license.

RCMP Criminal Record Check (Schedule A - Employer will file).

MCFD Hub Screening (Employer will file).

First Aid with CPR Certificate.

Food Safe Level 1 Certificate.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $25.00 per hour

Expected hours: 37.5 per week
