: Support Worker
Naomi Society supports women, children, and all genders through trauma-informed community prevention, outreach, support, and advocacy.
We provide services to those who have experienced domestic, family, intimate partner, and sexual violence in Antigonish and Guysborough Counties.
The Naomi Society is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and receives operational funding from the Department of Opportunities and Social Development and the Nova Scotia Status of Women. On a provincial level, Naomi Society is a member organization of the Transition House Association of Nova Scotia (THANS).
Terms of Employment
Permanent, Fulltime, Salary Range: $56,864.00-$66,950.00/year
Access to Chamber of Commerce Health Benefits and RRSP Benefit Program
35 Hours/Week, usually Monday-Friday, 0800-1600 with evenings and weekends when required
Some flexibility to work from home on occasion
Preferred Requirements:
• Diploma or degree in social sciences, social services, counselling or equivalent combination of training and expertise
• 2-5-years' experience with a strong understanding of the dynamics of family, intimate partner and sexual violence
• Experience in support counselling with a trauma informed approach
• Demonstrated ability to respond in a crisis situation while maintaining strong judgement and decision making
• Proficiency in the development, implementation and facilitation of educational programs and presentations
• Knowledge of the justice system
• Ability to navigate community support systems
• A strong sense of community resources and agencies
• Experience doing advocacy work
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Exceptional organizational and time management skills
• Exceptional computer skills
• Applicant must be willing to travel with compensation for mileage
• A valid driver's license, insurance, reliable transportation
• Clear Vulnerable Sector & Child Abuse Registry Check
The Support Worker reports directly to the Executive Director who is monitored by a volunteer Board of Directors. There are no subordinates reporting to this position, but functional direction is provided to the following:
Volunteers; including students who are on a placement through an educational institution
Part-time or temporary staff as assigned to you by the Executive Director
The Support Worker has three central responsibilities :
1. To provide direct & indirect services to women, adolescents and children who have been exposed to domestic, family, intimate partner and sexual violence.
2. To promote community development, prevention and awareness relating to domestic, family, intimate partner and sexual violence
3. To provide referral services.
The role of the Support Worker is to :
support women, children and adolescents who have been exposed to domestic, family intimate partner and sexual violence
listen and respond with a trauma informed lens
respond and mange crisis calls and visits
maintain confidentiality
have conversations about safety
advocate and provide accompaniment to appointments and court proceedings
research and provide resources
make connections to safe housing, including Transition Houses and emergency overnight shelters
provide and accept appropriate referrals to and from other community organizations
conduct other duties as directed by the Executive Director
The Support Worker will:
maintain case notes, client files and data management system
prepare concise monthly reports, gather statistical information, attend staff meetings, case conferences, and other meetings as required
assist with the volunteer recruitment, training and orientation
assist with fundraising activities
plan and facilitate support groups for clients who have been exposed to domestic, family. intimate partner and sexual violence
support in the preparation of proposal and grant applications for related projects
provide outreach services to Antigonish and Guysborough County
develop and present public education and awareness presentations in schools and in the community
work collaboratively as a representative of Naomi Society on various external committees and sub-committees related to family violence
ensure continued professional development to better serve clients
share resources and information with co-workers
work within the policies and procedures set by the Board of Directors
work effectively with the Executive Director, other Colleagues and Board members
comply with relevant provincial legislation such as: The Children & Family Services Act, Adult Protection Act
work from a feminist perspective
comply with the standards of the Transition House Association of Nova Scotia
