Job Description

The Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLSI) is a national research facility of the University of Saskatchewan. CLS produces very bright light to explore the nature and structure of molecules, and serves national and international users from academia, industry, and government institutions.

CLSI is now accepting applications for an Assistant or Associate Scientist position within our Bio/Life Sciences department on the BioXAS beamline - a group of three independently operating endstations, one dedicated to high-resolution XRF mapping and micro-XANES experiments and other two perfectly fit for X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy in extremely diluted samples. Beamline is suitable for various applications in Bio/Life, Environmental and Material Sciences within its operation range of 5-32 keV.

Responsibilities:



Training and supporting users at the beamline to ensure that they are able to perform their scientific experiments in a safe and effective manner Assisting users and beamline staff in sample preparation and data processing Aligning the beamline and setting up the endstation for users' experiments Analyzing and solving routine technical problems and developing recommendations to solve difficult, complex or unusual problems Preparing beamline documentation and ensuring designs conform to CLS standards, and other relevant codes, standards and practices Assisting the Beamline Responsible in the beamline upgrade/maintenance projects Developing technical expertise in specific areas of beamline operation and equipment, either in hardware or software Required to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to provide user support

Qualifications:



For the Support Scientist level, a relevant undergraduate or Master's degree in the natural sciences is required. For the Associate Scientist level, a relevant Master's degree or Ph.D. in the natural sciences is required. For the Support Scientist level, a minimum of two years of directly related experience with an undergraduate degree, or one year of related experience with a recently completed Master's degree, is required. For the Associate Scientist level, a minimum of two years of directly related experience with a Master's degree, or a minimum of one year of related experience with a recently completed Ph.D., is required. Relevant experience in X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy or XRF mapping is required. Previous experience supporting users at a synchrotron facility is considered an asset. Experience with advanced beamline instrumentation (e.g., detectors, cryostats, in-situ cells, etc.) is considered an asset. Basic programming skills and familiarity with Unix-based operating systems are preferred. Candidates should demonstrate a clear aptitude for service, teamwork, and research, particularly in collaborative programs.

Salary Range:

The Salary Range is $59,390 - $80,351 (Support), and $69,880 - $94,544 (Associate). Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Remuneration:

Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. A comprehensive benefits package, including supplemental health & dental, life insurance, pension plan, and four weeks' vacation is part of a competitive compensation package.
