How will you make an impact?

The Purchasing Supervisor manages a team of 7 - 10 direct reports including Junior and Senior Buyers. They will ensure the team meets our delivery commitments to our customers of finished goods (chemicals, supplies and equipment) from hundreds of suppliers across North America, Europe and Asia and that the Buyers meet the purchasing fill rate and inventory goals.

This role is based at our Ottawa, ON facility. We offer a hybrid work arrangement with 2 days on site and 3 days per week remote.

What will you do?

Key Responsibilities:

  • Actively and positively supports company goals and objectives including customer survey score improvements and order fulfillment metrics
  • Provides guidance and support to a team of in office and remote workers
  • Buyers perform the buying, maintain the optimal inventory dollar investment to maximize the fill rate metrics for an assigned group of Suppliers
  • Ensures quality, accuracy and timeline objectives are achieved or surpassed through inspection of team databases and/or reports and daily standup meetings
  • Maintains staff performance objectives and feedback is provided to staff throughout the year as well as during the formal performance management & development process.
  • Holds regular one on one meetings for the purposes of coaching, providing feedback and developing staff
  • Identifies supplier issues of concern and builds action plan for correction. Communicates and escalates issues of concern to the Buyer, Supply Chain Manager, Portfolio Management as well as appropriate Customer Service and Sales contacts.
  • Uses continuous process improvement tools to analyze data/work flow, identify gaps, and successfully implement solutions. Develops and maintain training programs to support process improvements.
  • Promotes a friendly environment with good morale and cooperation among team members and works to maintain a professional and productive relationship with members of other departments to maximize customer satisfaction.
  • Supports communication with Portfolio Management team and Suppliers during the annual price roll process helping to ensure cost accuracy and completeness of information.
  • Participates in candidate selection for team members when required.
  • Perform any other duties as may be required by the Manager of Supply Chain.
How will you get here?

Education:
  • Post-secondary degree/diploma education preferably in a business, procurement, logistics discipline or relevant background
  • Enrolment in, or completion of a Certified Purchasing professional designation such as APICS is an asset.
  • Bilingualism (French/English) is an asset.
Experience and Skills:
  • 2-3 years of supply chain, supervisory or related Thermo Fisher Scientific experience (familiar with our mainframe systems, databases and procedures) or equivalent background
  • Comfortable with and experience in handling large volume of data and taking decisions
  • Perseverance and results oriented in achieving customer satisfaction
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills to be able to evaluate, interpret information to provide innovative direction and focus for the team.
  • Proven track record of successful execution of identified improvements.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal), interpersonal and presentation skills to clearly express ideas, share information, communicate well with employees, suppliers, customers and all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to develop productive internal/external relationships that foster teamwork
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills to effectively coach, motivate and achieve successful employee performance and retention.
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills to meet team deadlines and assist staff in multi-tasking.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills in dealing with a variety of routine and non-routine issues to resolve customer and supplier concerns in a timely fashion.
  • Able to effectively handle conflict and change. Stress and pressure resistant in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Power Point, Access and Outlook, and strong skills in Excel., SQL and BI tools is an asset.
