Laboratory Services is a comprehensive program that provides 2.2 million tests per annum in support of all RVH clinical programs and clinical trials. RVH Laboratory Services is an Accredited services as recognized by Institute for Quality Management in Healthcare (IQMH) and have received and maintained ISO15189 Accreditation Plus designation.

By providing exceptional medical laboratory technology expertise and leadership, the Supervisor supports the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) strategic plan and MY CARE philosophy which includes the:

RESPONSIBILITIES:

As an integral member of the Laboratory team the Supervisor\'s responsibilities include:

Working with laboratory scheduling committees to develop and implement work schedules; maintaining/updating schedules

Developing, overseeing, and providing technical, professional, and quality in-services and education to laboratory and non-laboratory staff

Participating in staff and patient experience and feedback initiatives, professional development, teaching/ educational activities, safety and quality improvement programs to ensure excellence in the provision of services;

Forwarding suggestions for policy and procedure improvement or corrections required to, and working with, the appropriate stakeholder(s).

Observing and understanding hospital policies and procedures;

Adhering to hospital and departmental mission and vision statements while maintaining patient confidentiality;

Performing other related duties consistent with the job classification, as assigned, requested, or required.

SUPERVISION/ DIRECTION GIVEN:

  • Provides technical supervision and guidance for Medical Laboratory Technologists, Medical Laboratory Assistants, and Phlebotomists, ensuring work is completed, in accordance with established policies, best practice guidelines and Accreditation Canada Diagnostics requirements.
  • Recommends and communicates changes to enhance the efficient and cost-effective operation of the laboratory.
OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY:

Health and Safety Responsibilities:
  • Adheres to Occupational Health & Safety responsibilities under Section 25/26 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act including:
Advises a worker of the existence of any potential or actual danger to the health or safety of the worker of which the supervisor is aware;

Where so prescribed, provides a worker with written instructions as to the measures and procedures to be taken for protection of the worker; and

Takes every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of the worker.

Performs workplace inspections and investigations, remedies issues, and provides training/information to workers.

Monitors health and safety performance of workers and corrects/commends actions

Promotes a culture of safety which encourages prevention, reduces errors and safeguards patients from harm.

SKILLS/ABILITES:

Demonstrated knowledge of Accreditation Canada Diagnostics program preferred.

Demonstrated knowledge of current technologies within the field.

Demonstrated proficiency with keyboarding, Laboratory Information Systems (Meditech preferred), MS Office, internet use and another computer software.

Demonstrated professionalism, interpersonal skills, and ability to work effectively with staff, physicians, volunteers, patient families, and visitors.

Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong teaching skills required.

Demonstrated excellent organizational and time management skills, and ability to handle multiple tasks at a time in a cost-effective manner.

Effective time management skills, ability to organize work and set priorities for self and others

Demonstrated ability to perform duties independently and as a team member, with high degree of motivation and independent judgment.

Demonstrated commitment to continuing education.

Demonstrated excellent conflict resolution and change management skills; able to motivate and maintain objectivity.

Demonstrated ability to self-regulate and de-escalate in potentially high-conflict situations

Demonstrated strong critical thinking and problem-solving ability.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION
  • Certification in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognized post- secondary institute;
EXPERIENCE

Minimum three to five (3-5) years recent laboratory experience.

Previous leadership experience an asset.

General knowledge of all areas of the laboratory preferred.

General knowledge of the theory and practices of applicable laboratories procedures and equipment required.

Meditech and LIS knowledge and experience an asset.

PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATION:
  • Current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO).
  • Current registration with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).
  • Participation in professional committees, networks recommended.
Unless otherwise stated applicants must have a minimum educational requirement of Grade 12 or equivalent and must demonstrate proven workplace excellence through commitment to strong job performance and attendance.

Please be reminded that as a Regional Health Centre, in order to provide the necessary patient care, our operations run 24/7. Therefore, depending on the program for which you are applying, it may be an expectation that you are available to work week days and weekends, as well as all shifts - days, evenings, and nights.
