Job Description


INTRO The Supervisor directs and monitors the work staff within the Waste Management Areas (WMAs) to ensure the safe day-to-day operation, use and maintenance of the facility and its assets in accordance with company practices, approved and authorized procedures, and the Facility Authorization. DUTIES


Functions and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

General Accountabilities


  • Ensuring the day-to-day safe operation, use, and maintenance of the Facility in accordance with established policies and procedures. (This is accomplished by assessing work requirements or work permits, assigning work to trained and qualified staff, and overseeing activities by all people working within the facility the training and development of operating personnel.



  • Preparation of operating manuals, procedures, and work plans.



  • The overall technical support of the Facility.



  • Supervising the assigned staff for operations and maintenance activities within the Facility



  • The Operations Supervisor is also responsible for the promotion of a good safety culture and managing good housekeeping standards.



  • Supervise and delegate work to a team (presently up to 30) of WMA technologists, Utility workers, Hoisting Engineers, Millwrights, RP staff and others.



  • Build and lead a highly motivated team by leading by example, coaching, training, and mentoring.



  • Able to act as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC), managing the emergency response function within the facility.



  • Complete required training as defined in the Conduct of Operations Procedure and Training Plan.



  • Lead Plan-of-Day Meetings with facility staff, ensure Pre-Job Briefs and Post-Job Reviews for work in the facility are completed daily, and when required perform the duties of Work Permit Authorizer for the facility.



  • Authorize and schedule all work within the WMA facility via work permits to meet customer commitments; liaise with customers and suppliers.



  • Develop an expertise in facility operations; provide operations input in support of continued safe and efficient facility operations.
  • Order routine operational equipment and materials used to operate WMA.



  • Identify day-to-day maintenance issues, initiate work requests, and liaise with planning and maintenance personnel to address maintenance issues.



  • Identify and ensure preventive and breakdown maintenance activities are assigned with minimal disruption to operations in the facility.



  • Support development and implementation of training.



  • Monitor and review facility operational practices to enhance facility availability, efficiency or to reduce costs.



  • Ensure supplies are obtained to support facility operations




Administrative Duties


  • Lead and/or assist in conducting interviews, goal setting, performing performance appraisals, career development, disciplinary and promotion actions for WMA staff.



  • Authorize time sheets; arrange and approve personnel work schedules, including personnel vacation and overtime.



  • Complete and track routine facility surveillance and equipment tests.



  • As required, issue facility work permits and maintenance requests.



  • Conduct safety meetings and implement actions



  • Update, upgrade, and review operational procedures.



  • Other administrative duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS


Education:


The position requires a relevant university degree or a technical college diploma, and 7-10 years of experience, or equivalent combination of skills, training and experience.

Experience:


  • Demonstrated experience in managing successfully completed projects.
  • Candidates with extensive experience in the operations or maintenance of nuclear facilities that includes supervisory experience and experience in waste management will also be considered.
  • Familiarity with radioactive waste management principles would be an asset.


Abilities and Skills:



  • Must have demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills, along with the ability to delegate effectively. Must have the ability to work smoothly and effectively with customers, technical staff, colleagues and management.
  • Initiative to resolve problems and expedite resources, work plans or other appropriate actions.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, maintain a clear focus on team goals, and establish good rapport with groups and individuals of many diverse areas of expertise is required.
  • Strong organizational, work planning, and operational skills.
  • Must be capable of planning multiple tasks effectively, including work prioritization and delegating authority to subordinates.
  • Ability to perform a variety of duties, changing tasks without loss of efficiency or composure.
  • Must be willing to take supervisory, technical and other training courses to increase skills.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communications skills; the ability to disseminate information to other team members and clients and strong team problem-solving skills are essential.
Knowledge of computers, including Microsoft Office Suite and standard CNL software is required
  • Must demonstrate a mechanical aptitude and have a sound working knowledge of mechanical systems, process systems and basic instrumentation.
  • Must be able to read and interpret technical drawings and review engineering designs for operational functionality as a Client Representative. Must be able to write effective reports.
  • Must be mature, trustworthy, and exercise sound judgment with a keen sense of responsibility.
Job/Industry Specific Knowledge:


  • Must have a strong knowledge in the operations of a nuclear facility.
  • Must have a working knowledge of the hazards associated with handling radioactive materials. Demonstrated knowledge of ALARA principles including hazardous work assessments and radiological work planning within a nuclear operating environment.
  • Knowledge of CAN N286 and ISO 9000 standards.
  • Must demonstrate a mechanical aptitude and have a sound working knowledge of mechanical systems, process systems and basic instrumentation.
  • Must be able to read and interpret technical drawings and review engineering designs for operational functionality as a Client Representative. Must be able to write effective reports.
  • Relevant experience in an operating nuclear facility would be an asset.
