Position Summary

The Supervisor, Arts & Culture is responsible for overseeing the development, coordination, and delivery of arts and cultural programs, initiatives, and events within the municipality. This role supports the growth of vibrant cultural activities that engage the community, promote diversity, and celebrate local heritage. The Supervisor provides leadership to arts and culture staff, volunteers, ensures compliance with municipal policies, and fosters partnerships with community organizations, artists, and partners.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee the planning, development, and implementation of arts and cultural programs, events, and initiatives, ensuring they reflect the community's diversity and creativity while ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, risk management practices, and municipal policies.

Guide and support arts and culture staff, volunteers, and program facilitators, ensuring effective program delivery, operational excellence, and fostering community engagement.

Collaborate with artists, cultural organizations, community groups, and external partners to support partnerships, public art projects and cultural initiatives.

Assist in the preparation and monitoring of the departmental budget, ensuring expenditures are within the allocated budget, and providing regular financial updates to management.

Develop and implement marketing and outreach strategies to promote arts and cultural events, increasing community awareness and participation.

Coordinate event logistics, including venue management, vendor coordination, technical operations, Box Office operations, customer service, ticket sales, and supplier services to ensure smooth event execution.

Address public inquiries, feedback, and concerns in a professional and timely manner, providing excellent customer service to ensure positive community relations.

Prepare reports, grant applications, and funding proposals to support arts and culture initiatives and secure external funding resources.

Monitor program outcomes, gather participant feedback, and recommend improvements to enhance program quality and community engagement.

Negotiate, prepare, and monitor contracts and agreements with artists, performers, and other interest-holders involved in program delivery, including coordinating event entertainment, ticketing, security, and food service operations.

Supervise and oversee the programming and operation of the Arts Centre including the technical operations for events.

Administer licensing and insurance requirements for events and rentals, ensuring all necessary documentation is completed and clients meet liability coverage requirements.

Leadership of Others

Guide and support team members to meet operational objectives, ensuring compliance with organizational standards, policies, and procedures.

Foster a collaborative and respectful work environment by addressing concerns, providing constructive feedback, and supporting skill development.

Play an active role in the recruitment process by participating in candidate screening, interviews, and hiring decisions while ensuring candidates have a positive experience.

Facilitate the successful onboarding of newly hired employees by delivering comprehensive training and continuous development, ensuring alignment between their role, organizational objectives, and the municipality's culture.

Position Requirements

Education & Certifications:


Diploma in Arts Administration, Cultural Management, Theatre Management, Event Planning or a related field.

Experience:


Minimum 5 years of experience in arts and culture program development, event coordination, theatre management or related fields, preferably with prior experience in a supervisory role.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


Arts & Culture Expertise: Strong understanding of cultural programming, community arts initiatives, and event planning.

Leadership: Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop staff in a dynamic, fast paced environment.

Event Coordination: Knowledge of event logistics, including scheduling, vendor management, promotion, and risk assessment.

Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills for public engagement, interest-holder collaboration, and reporting.

Collaboration: Strong ability to build partnerships with artists, cultural organizations, and community partners.

Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and decision-making skills to address operational challenges effectively.

Organization: Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines effectively.

Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, recreation management software and marketing tools such as social media platforms and graphic design software.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a variety of settings including office, cultural venues, and outdoor event spaces. Transportation between sites is the responsibility of the incumbent.

Standard business hours, Monday to Friday, with flexibility required to support programs, events, and operational needs.

Cognitive demands include addressing issues related to event coordination, logistical challenges, customer concerns, and staff performance in a timely and effective manner and developing, implementing, and evaluating arts and cultural programs and initiatives that reflect community diversity, align with organizational goals, and meet community needs.

Physical demands include extended periods of sitting and looking at a computer screen, as well as lifting event equipment, setting up venues, and working in various weather conditions.
