The Infrastructure, Transportation & Parks Department is currently recruiting for a temporary full-time Supervisor 2, for approximately two (2) years. In this leadership position, you will provide skilled supervision by coordinating, planning, directing, and participating in the tasks of crews related to the Urban Forestry division of Operations.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Section Manager of Urban Forestry and Watersheds the successful candidate will be responsible for the technical, supervisory, andoperational aspects of the City's urban forestry program, including protection, maintenance, planting, inspections, and removals. The incumbent oversees crews performing urban forestry operations, tree risk assessments, and natural area preservation activities. An incumbent also responds to public complaints and inquiries for tree-related matters, attempts to resolve conflicts within defined policies, examines tree cutting permits and development plans, and makes recommendations regarding removal, retention, and care of trees according to City policy. In addition, an incumbent is also responsible for conducting research and providing advice and sustainable recommendations to senior staff regarding tree management programs, policies, and issues. You will plan, assign, coordinate, and supervise the work of skilled trades employees and other crew members to ensure performance standards, specifications, and safety procedures are met. You will also prepare cost and time estimates, monitor budget expenditures, and participate in the development of annual work schedules, operating and capital budgets, and long-range plans. In addition, you will establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts, resolve service requests and complaints from the public and other City departments, prepare and maintain records and reports, and order materials and equipment.
Requirements
You are known for your excellent leadership and supervisory skills and possess a demonstrated knowledge of safety procedures and processes. You will have completed Grade 12, supplemented by a degree or diploma in Urban forestry or natural resource management plus considerable related technical experience as well as considerable supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Certification as an Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture as well as their International Society of Arboriculture Tree Risk Assessor Qualification is an asset. A thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, procedures, materials, tools, and equipment used in urban forestry operations, arboriculture, natural areas maintenance is required. You will be proficient with Microsoft Office, GIS, PeopleSoft, and Infor Public Works (IPS), or similar financial and asset management systems. A current Pesticide Applicator's Certificate and a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License are also required.
Compensation
$48.22 per hour
(January 2024 rates)
Hours of Work
7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday to Friday
